Can I put my volunteering as work experience on my cv?

Hi, sorry if this sounds like an odd question. I’ve volunteered as a listener at the Samaritans for a few years now and and am applying for a new job. I was just wondering if it’s ok for me to put it under work experience (or other interests) on my cv. I have a friend who told me to leave it out as sometimes the Samaritans can be seen as a controversial organisation. I’ve found volunteering there so rewarding and I feel it has given me so many skills that make me more employable- would it be ok to put down? Thank you

Ive put all my volunteering jobs on my CV. No harm in it, shows enthusiasm.

I haven't ever thought of the Samaritans as a controversial organisation, and as someone who regularly recruits for a variety of roles, I would say that you should definitely include this on your CV.

Samaritans Purse is unrelated and batshit. The Samaritans isn't.

I'd definitely put it down if you've been away from the workplace or if the skills gained are relevant to the new role.

I'd put it under job history if you would otherwise have a gap but if you've been employed I'd put it under interests.

I have never heard about Samaritans being controversial though, although now I do think about it aren't you not supposed to tell anyone you volunteer there? So maybe you need to call it something else?

I volunteered for Childline (not exactly the same but similar type of lstening service) and that's included on my CV under 'other experience'.

Samaritans Purse is unrelated and batshit.

Indeed! It hadn't occurred to me that people might confuse the two, but I think this is probably what is in your friend's mind.

Good point though from Alloverthegrapevine, maybe check with the Samaritans as to whether you are allowed to disclose that you volunteer for them.
