As the title says, there's a spurious App on my phone, I've checked and it's been charging my account £7.49 a week since October ! I'm godsmacked! It's

Future baby & palmistry

Apple have approved a refund of £50 but I've spent over £300 on this bloody thing - I'm pissed off with myself I didn't even se it and have no subscriptions usually so never check my phone subscriptions ... I didn't even realise I could to be honest until today

Any ideas for this techno numpty to get my money back? I suspect it's a free trial thing they got clicked and it's automatically started charging and continued for 9 months! Argh
Thanks

It should be clear that it's a free trial and then you pay from X date unless you cancel. I think Apple have been generous in giving you a £50 refund. Do you not check your bank account regularly?

notanaturalmum · 22/07/2020 14:28

I'm not sure why you think you can get your money back.
If it's maybe one week over and you forgot to cancel then maybe.
But 9 months, and presuming it emails you every week to confirm payment.
I don't understand what you're going to tell them.
Not noticing that you've had it installed isn't exactly a valid reason.
I'm trying to tell you this in the nicest way possible but I think this might just be an expensive life lesson for you.

Sorry.

flyingant · 22/07/2020 14:31

Did you actually download it, agree to pay for it after a trial period and then forget about it? If so, I'm not sure there is anything you can do but put it down experience.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 22/07/2020 14:37

Did you download it?

Did you then agree to start a free trial and if not cancelled be charged that amount every week/month?

Did you just forget about it afterwards?

Have you used the app since?

If yes, you are not entitled to a refund, it's as simple as that. Not even the £50 which I assume it was a gesture of good will.

vanillandhoney · 22/07/2020 14:44

Eh? Why do you think Apple owe you anything?

Don't you check your bank statements?

custardbear · 22/07/2020 15:12

I didn't download it

Also I've never used it and I can't find the icon on any of my phones or iPad

I get an email every time a subscription goes out of my account from Apple. Did you get these and just ignore?

applepineapple · 22/07/2020 15:21

You need to approve any app purchase with your Apple ID. So it won't just have downloaded it out of nowhere

heartsonacake · 22/07/2020 15:45

You will have downloaded it, you just don’t remember. You aren’t entitled to your money back and Apple have been generous with a £50 refund.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 22/07/2020 15:49

@custardbear if you go to the app store and search for the app , it will show if it was downloaded previously and deleted.

Do you have children? Could one of them got it on your tablet without your knowledge?

alicequartz · 22/07/2020 15:50

You can also disable in app purchases .

custardbear · 22/07/2020 17:22

@alicequartz - how do you do the cancelling of in-app purchases? That would be helpful

OP posts:
LtJudyHopps · 22/07/2020 17:24

You’d get an email from Apple every time they took the money. It would also be on your bank statement. How did you miss this every week since October?!

lifesalongsong · 22/07/2020 17:26

How did you not notice for over 9 months, unless there's a good reason for that I'm not sure I believe that you didn't download the app.

heartsonacake · 22/07/2020 17:32
@alicequartz - how do you do the cancelling of in-app purchases? That would be helpful
Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Turn On > iTunes & App Store Purchases > In App Purchases > Set to Don’t Allow

But if you agreed to a trial that you then didn’t end, which has led you to pay £7.49 a month, that wouldn’t be covered by in app purchases because it’s not an in-app purchase. It’s an agreement you acknowledged when you took the trial.
