Who have you always loved and who have you recently discovered?

I've been listening to jazz for over 30 years so started off listening to the greats like Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Ella.

Discovered my favourites in the next generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cassandra Wilson, Madeleine Peyroux .

Who's new on the scene that I should be listening to?

Clearly I seem to prefer female jazz voices, but any male jazz voices I shouldn't miss out on.

I've recently found the Avalon Jazz band. Love them.

Of the vocalists, Stacey Kent and Marian Montgomery are good. As for musicians, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Michel Petruciani and Bobby Hutcherson are all worth a listen. I'm not at all keen on guitars in jazz though.

Probably not to your taste but I love a bit of Jan Garbarek and Keith Jarrett.

I do recognise that I'm more of a smooth jazz fan. Can't cope with Miles Davis, sounds like he's got a bumble bee stuck up his trumpet ( apologies to MD fans Grin )

Knot of Place and Time by Jan Garbarek is a superb tune. Very trippy. Keith Jarrett is a good pianist but his 'vocalisations' are piss-annoying.

Each to her own :-) op you might like Brad Mehldau.

Chet Baker. Wonderful musician, lovely moody singing voice. Never knew about him for years, and now I'm in love!

Yy to Billie Holliday and Chet Baker. I like Miles Davis too.
I don't have as many favourites in the 'new' group, but am lucky enough to visit Ronnie's regularly, so get to hear some great sets, even if I wouldnt listen to them again. They've been doing lots of live streaming at the moment, so you may find something new and interesting there.

waltzingparrot · 21/07/2020 12:49

Thank you all, I shall work my way through the names you've suggested. I like a bit of Chet Baker myself.

I also love a Sunday morning of jazz whilst preparing a Sunday lunch.
