I woke up last night terrified and nearly called an ambulance, between my neck and shoulder had seized up and there was a stabbing pain in my head. My neck went into spasm about 10 days ago, its getting tighter and tighter affecting my shoulder neck and skull and i have migraine. I usually wait it out to release on its own but WFH, i'm not doing any walking etc and am at a laptop all day so I think thats why its getting worse. The right side of my body is very prone to muscles spasming and i think my pillow is really exacerbating the current spasm. What pillows do you guys recommend?

Not sure about pillows but could this be something to do with working on your laptop and the way you are sitting or craning your neck due to screen height?

@startingtoday it probably is but this is an old problem I have, made worse by the current WFH situation. My pillows are terrible however and i think getting a supported nights sleep would help

A tempur cloud pillow has been great for me since I had a similar sounding issue (recommendation by the osteopath). Also - a visit to the osteopath if you are able!

I had a similar experience all through last year OP. Often woke up with searing neck/shoulder pain. I ended up having to pay for private physio a few times as it was so bad I would’ve struggled to go to work.

DH and I invested in TheraPur Cool Pillows a few months ago and they have been life changing, honestly. They’re pricey but they’re so supportive. I still VERY occasionally wake up with a stiff neck, which I think is often because of how I sleep (side sleeper with arm under pillow). The physio advised against it but I often end up in this position during the night!

I also work on a laptop all day. I’ve found it very useful buying a laptop stand and separate keyboard so that I can have my laptop set at eye level so I’m not looking down all day.

Could you try doing some light exercise on a daily basis? Last year I had terrible pain in my upper back and the physio said it’s so important to keep moving.

The type of pillow depends what position you sleep in. I've been having similar problems and have been doing some research. Dunelm's website say what positions their pillows work best for. Also if your pillow is very old it may just need replacing. There is some advice if you search through earlier threads that you may find useful. Good luck there's nothing worse than waking up in pain.
