I need to fight those evening munchies. Food is all I can think of at the moment. Help!

Brush your teeth! (Excellent advice given to me last week on the 5:2 thread).

CoralReefer · 13/07/2020 19:54

Thank you I will do that but not snacking is flipping hard work. It’s so annoying.i wish I could just switch off my appetite and cravings.

I hear you! I'm only on day two...Sad I lost 2.5 stone earlier this year but came off the diet and went a bit mad. I think I've put about 7+lbs back on. My trousers are tight round the waistband anyway. I had been living in comfy bottoms and got quite a shock when I put the normal (Non elasticated.) trousers back on. I knew I had put weight back on but was a bit shocked really. My danger time is in the evening/at night, you? Good tip about the teeth brushing though. I've tried that before and your mouth feels so clean and fresh, you don't want to ruin it! Grin
How much are you looking to lose if you don't mind me asking? I'm going for the 7lbs to start with. I'm 5'6.5" and last time I weighed (Before putting any back on.) I was 12 st 7lb. You?

MynameisHappind · 13/07/2020 20:09

Keto switches off your cravings and appetite.

DollyMixtureLulus · 13/07/2020 20:09

Can you go for a walk? Take no money so you're not tempted to buy anything.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2020 20:10

Have a fruit tea and tell yourself being bigger than you want to be, uncomfortable in your clothes is worse than the cravings

Ijustreallywantacat · 13/07/2020 20:13

Drink a glass of water. Ask yourself if you are actually hungry, or if you're feeling bad. If you are still hungry, eat something. Eat very slowly, and stop when you're full.

CoralReefer · 13/07/2020 20:38

@73kittycat73 you’ve done so well to lose 2.5 stone so it would be crying shame to undo all of that hard, hard work. Well done. I think you can lose 7lbs easily.

I’d ideally like to lose 2.5 stone too but my first goal is 1.5 stone. I’ll be thrilled to lose that.

I hate being overweight so you’re right @OnlyFoolsnMothers being uncomfortable is worse than the cravings.

I’ve tried keto before but I just don’t enjoy it. I’m not a fan of meat or dairy so I like to include lots of pulses in my food.

Thanks for the pep talk. I had some water, I’m going to brush my teeth now. I’ve walked loads today and love my walks in the morning but too tired to go now.

Keto really is the best way to stop these cravings, but if you don’t like it, try the Michael Moseley diets, e.g. the blood sugar diet, as he uses more pulses etc.
It’s the same principle....get your body burning fat instead of glucose and this will balance your hunger / satiety hormones and your cravings will stop.

You want a snack because your body just ran out of glucose supply (from carbs) and you need to break the cycle....the cycle lasts about 2-3 hours so unless you break that cycle and train your body to use its stored fat...that will be your life ( and your failed diet!)

Scotlandiscold · 13/07/2020 20:44

Make sure you eat lots and lots of protein - beans, lentils, tofu etc. I find cutting out food groups to be a danger zone and make me crave it more!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/07/2020 20:48

Paint your nails, distraction and snacking is more difficult with wet nails!

user1493413286 · 13/07/2020 20:49

Cup of tea or if you’re allowed low calorie hot chocolate helped me

H1978 · 13/07/2020 20:49

Stuck in the same situation here 😕 it’s bloody hard isn’t it, not being able to eat what and when you want?

I calorie count and always leave some calories for a treat within my allocated amount, I find it helps any cravings. Also take yourself upstairs early on a night so you’re not tempted to pop into the kitchen for a snack.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/07/2020 20:55

The best way to prevent snacking is to feed yourself good food that you enjoy at meal times. When did you last eat, OP? If it was less than 4 hours ago are you really hungry or just bored?

shquadleis · 13/07/2020 20:58

I'm doing calorie counting. Finding it much less restrictive and I'm losing weight much better than on slimming world. I usually save some for a small treat in the evening.

73kittycat73 · 13/07/2020 21:01

Thank you @CoralReefer, we can do this! Grin I've just gone and brushed my teeth now...I wish you well with losing the weight.
I know you don't want to go on it, but I must admit, I was very surprised with my hunger levels on The Fast 800. It was basically keto. After the first day or two I didn't feel hungry at all. The cravings weren't so bad either. However, I love potatoes! (And cake! Grin Wink ) Even have the odd tiger bread roll, so can understand you not wanting to do it.
I hope the craving passes for you after you've brushed your teeth. Smile
I'm doing the same today @H1978 . I suffer from insomnia and the only thing that works 9 times out of 10 is to get up and eat something sweet, then go back to bed. I have about 150-200 cals left. My mum bought back some new low calorie (95/99) chocolate bars from The frozen food shop Iceland last week. They are OK. Pretty chewy, but that just makes you feel like you've had a good portion. Grin They've got them in toffee and strawberry. So I'm having one of them tonight. Smile

EmmaStone · 13/07/2020 21:50

I've been calorie counting using My Fitness Pal. I'm attempting a 500 calorie deficit a day, and using my Apple Watch as well for an idea of total calories burned each day (as keeping to the 1200 cals recommended by MFP, and trying to maintain my normal exercise was leaving me exhausted). I don't have lots to lose, just trying to get rid of the weight that's crept on over the years, and have found it very effective in losing approx 1lb a week.

I don't want my children knowing I'm dieting, so I tend to skip breakfast (unless exercising in the morning), as we all do our own thing in the morning, but we're eating all lunches and dinners together at the moment, so I don't want to draw attention to what I am, or not eating. With a good stint of exercise, it usually leaves me spare calories for my evening treat.

CoralReefer · 13/07/2020 22:00

I’m not bored or hungry but was craving food badly. It’s so annoying.
@hamstersarse that makes sense to me because the craving feels physiological. Your explanation has really helped me to understand it. Knowledge is power and all that, I now feel a bit more in control.

I’m calorie counting too but and eating only between 11 and 7.

Good luck to all struggling/dieting too. Keep fighting Smile

@CoralReefer are they the skinny whip bars? I love them! Fibre one bars are really nice too and only 90 calories

@EmmaStone I’m doing exactly like you using my fitness pal alongside my Apple Watch. Stopped around quarantine time as I couldn’t concentrate because my mind was on COVID the whole time but back on it now and started exercising with YouTube too, even for just 20 minutes.
