Or at least if I do, it's few and far between. He's only really happy when he's off to meet his mates. We're mid 30's and he's always grumpy.

Do you have children together? If so I can imagine him feeling happy and stress-free at going out with his mates and leaving you to cope with everything.

If you don't have children, I think it's more concerning.
