Finally I have the prospect of an actual bedroom with a bed! I'm ridiculously excited, it's been years of sleeping on a rickety old sofa bed and my back is feeling it hard.

I promised myself that Shen the time came I would buy the best bed ever. Something luxurious that I would enjoy being in.

I'm overwhelmed with choice, I love Sleigh style, heavy wooden frames, I also like the idea of a four poster but that might be a childhood dream.

Also king size, is it really better than a double? I like space to sleep so I'm thinking yes but I've never had anything other than a small double.

We have a king size waterbed. It is by far the most comfortable thing ever. And from someone who suffers from chronic pain, that's saying something.

Get laid beds do the best bed frames. They're really solid and well built, and you can customise to your design,

We have my dream bed. It’s a kingsize black cast iron frame (think Bedknobs and Broomsticks) and has a memory foam mattress that’s at least a foot thick. I hate sleeping anywhere else!

dramalamma · 07/07/2020 20:19

I can't help you with what to buy as we bought ours while living abroad but definitely get the best and the biggest you can afford - we spend more time in bed than in any other single place - we might as well enjoy it! Ours is even bigger than super king and was bought from a luxury chain of hotels in Asia - their "showroom" was literally giving us a key card for one of their bedrooms so we could go and try it out. It's enormous and so comfy and now we have an even bigger (caeser size) wool duvet on top that you just melt under and is so squishy and lovely. I just want to go to bed right now!

@TitsalinaBumSquash

I definitely agree with buying the biggest bed you can - I have a king as a single woman

Think about the headboard. I LOVE morning coffee in bed and it's utterly unenjoyable with stabby uneven slatted wooden headboards. I have a velvet headboard ottoman bed from danetti and it's wonderful (plus storage) mattress is Ikea pocket sprung firm (very good and I've spent loads on pocket sprung mattresses previously) plus memory foam topper and sheep wool duvet (reject bin on baavet website) with cotton linen from la redoute. Natural fibres make a massive difference to temperature control

I'd always go for a sleigh, it's fine to change it. It feels cosy. Layer with lots of throws. This is where we got it from.

I like heavy wood furniture.

Another vote for the iGel mattress from Bensons. Had it 4 years and I still do a happy sigh every time I lie on it (which is as much as possible). They're like when you're a kid and imagine lying on a cloud!

NickMyLipple · 07/07/2020 20:34

We have a super king bed with the most amazing Dunlopillo mattress. They're latex so never go saggy in the middle and no dust mites! I sleep a solid 9 hours now which was unheard of a couplen of years ago.

We also have electric beds so I can lift my legs/head to find the best position. This definitely helps with getting a solid night sleep too, but the biggest thing is the mattress!

Millie2013 · 07/07/2020 20:35

Super king size bed. Hypnos Cohan mattress. Bliss!

bluefoxmug · 07/07/2020 20:36

ikea hemnes
superking with 2 ikea single foam matresses.
it's bliss, lots of space and I can't feel dh move at all.

ChequerBoard · 07/07/2020 20:37

Definitely get the biggest bed you can and burly the best quality mattress you can afford. I have a Vi-Spring super king bed and it is genuinely the most comfortable and luxurious bed I have ever slept in. It's better than any hotel bed, just the right combination of supportive and soft.

Also buy lovely pillows and high thread count bed linen, no point having a lively bed and poor quality bed linens.

bluefoxmug · 07/07/2020 20:39

@TitsalinaBumSquash I am soooo pleased that you will get more space! good luck with everything!

btw we went with ikea mainly because we didn't fancy a 6 week wait as with many furniture stores. plus ikea matresses usually fare quite well in quality tests.

MistyIsland · 07/07/2020 20:43

Our bed frame is a Laura Ashley metal one! It’s by far the best one we’ve ever had.

We used to have a solid oak one which was absolutely awful.

I think it’s all in the mattress not the bed frame

irisnotadaff · 07/07/2020 20:47

I need the biggest bed ever...DC, DH, cats! Anyone got bigger than a super king? Mines not quite big enough....!

Namechangex10000 · 07/07/2020 20:48

Also, you said you have s chronic pain condition, I’m not sure what that specifically means, but I will say that over time I have developed hip problems (due to the memory foam mattress) and I can barely move sometimes. It’s horrible. I can’t imagine ever being able to afford a new one either 😞

SimonJT · 07/07/2020 20:49

I have a bed like the one in the photo, its a super king, I have three original brick walls in my room (and black metal original window frames) and the walk behind the headboard is old scaffolding boards. I don’t have any curtain things on it or anything, it was £80 second hand!

I have a tempur mattress, I know they’re pricey but it will last for a long time.

Tell me about your amazing bed.
ThankyouPeter · 07/07/2020 21:04

Another vote for Vi-spring - amazing. You can also have split tension so firm on one half and medium on the other if that suits you. I think that's fairly common nowadays but it definitely wasn't the last time we bought one. Genius idea!

lottiegarbanzo · 07/07/2020 21:07

King is worth it.

I spent a lot of time choosing a mattress a year or so ago. Well worth it. Different people like different kinds, so you do have to try, talk to staff, go to different shops, try, think about it and try, before deciding.

Personally, I don't like memory foam. I was convinced by JL staff that my idea that hard mattresses are good was wrong and that what you want is a bit of sinking in / it rising to meet you, so that your spine is straight when you're on your side. The one I chose is their 'medium', not hard and it is right and I really love it.

I started off thinking 'king mattress, that's about £500?' Ha ha. No. Some are much cheaper than others but, if possible, I'd really recommend shortlisting the ones you really like and feel comfortable with first, then letting price limit your final selection as necessary afterwards.

JoeExoticsTiger · 07/07/2020 21:12

We have a bed from the Cotswold company and as a pp mentioned an igel from bensons for beds - it’s amazing!

RaspberryToupee · 07/07/2020 21:28

Getting a king made all the difference for us, a lot less arguments about space. A lot less time kicking him because he’s on my side. A warning though - most people will have double or 3/4 beds in their guest rooms so staying in other places is a bit of pain now! Although you cannot beat the feeling of being back in your bed after a week in your mum’s sore double, even better if DH doesn’t go to bed at the same time as you!

We got a mammoth mattress, which was stocked at Furniture Village. They had a number of beds that were designed by mammoth (which I think we went for) but the mattress could also fit other beds. Our bed is the comfiest I’ve ever slept on and was apparently the bed of choice for the England rugby team due to its support of your spine. We also got the pillows to go with it, we only need one pillow which is at the perfect height. When we sleep in the spare room we can’t get the number of pillows right now because they’re all at slightly the wrong height. I forget the exact specifics on how this works now but the top layer of the mattress helps to pull moisture away from you and keep you cool. Thought it was a load of BS at the time but we were willing to give it a try because the mattress was comfy. It does actually work. DH runs really hot and in our old bed he was constantly getting too hot and sweating 🤢 He had to have two chillows (cooling gel inserts for your pillow) because he would never have a cool side of the pillow and would use one and then change it out in the middle of the night. In the middle of summer the sheets needed changing every other day. With this mattress, it does seem to keep him a lot cooler, absolutely no need for chillows and no sweating. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I always run cold but I don’t find myself cold with whatever is going on with the top layer.
