C*nt - American vs UK?

So I just recently found out that cunt as an insult has very different connotations in the US and the UK. In the US apparently it is more used as a horrible insult against women, or men deemed effeminate. Maybe an American can confirm this is correct?

I have personally never found it offensive, but thinking about it in the American context I think it would be a pretty horrible word. Now am trying to think back to any times I have used it jokingly in front of Americans...they must think I am awful.

I agree it does seem to be a bit generational. At my age (50s) it’s very strong swearword. When I hear posters on MN calling the OP‘s partner one, for example, I just feel like they are trying too hard and attention seeking and I find it a bit pathetic. I appreciate the Scottish usage difference though.

As for the use of twat. That’s interesting and I know it means the same thing. But I think its broader usage has watered it down. It can be used as an insult, a term of endearment, to describe punching someone and describe overtaking them. Also rolls off the tongue especially if you come from Yorkshire

That's interesting @Pleasebeaflesbite. I live in Yorkshire and don't find the word twat particularly insulting, to me cunt is a very strong swear word, and one my family, friends and I never, ever use. We are all late 40s and older.

My grandmother banned “blimey” because it was blasphemous.

My mum was fond of a good cunt on occasion. She really hated “clit” for some reason, she found it extremely vulgar.

But clot is very pleasurable and the widespread knowledge of it Is beneficial to us all!

I grew up in the States and I've lived here for 25 years and I would never call anyone that. I think it's the worse swear word out there.
