Putting aside all practical concerns of where you live, work, commutes, catchment areas, admissions criteria etc... If you could send your kids to any state secondary in the UK, which would it be?

We are looking to buy a forever house in the next couple of years. We don't have many geographical constraints, and so we are thinking of looking for houses near a great school.

Are state schools all pretty interchangeable, or are there a few doing something really special?

St Aidan's or Harrogate Grammar (which is now a comprehensive). Harrogate is a lovely town to live in

It would depend on the child but one of
Lady Margaret for girls
Nonsuch
Wymondham if they didn’t mind boarding
The Oratory probably as we’re Catholic or Methody if in Belfast
Peter Symonds for sixth form.
