Would you ask a neighbour if you could read their magazine? CF territory.

I live in a small hamlet of 3 houses. Two are unoccupied (Officially derelict), ours is the only house that has been occupied in the hamlet for many years and as a result all the post for all 3 properties comes to us.

The other two properties are now both currently under planning to be renovated. One of them, the people who have bought it are currently living in the grounds of the house in a caravan (very illegally but we don't mind). They are nice, we like them. We are still receiving their post but passing it on to them. This is a bit of a pain for us but, fine. One of them has skills they quite often 'trade' with my DP for his trade skills so we have a bit of a 'scratch each other's backs' relationship with them that we don't want to spoil.

They travel a lot and don't have a letterbox in the house or caravan so it can quite often be a week or so before we are able to pass stuff on to them in person.

One of them has recently started to receive a subscription for a publication I am very interested in but can't justify a subscription for. Every fortnight it comes through the post and I stare at it longingly in its plastic prison until we can pass it on. Very often it is out of date before they get it.

None of the local newsagents sell it, so subscription is the only way to get it.

How fucking cheeky would it be to A) ask to read it when they are finished with it or B) read it before they do when they are AWOL and pass it on to them sans plastic and say NOTHING about the lack of plastic or C) Ferret through their recycling each night after we have passed it on.

These are obviously the only options available to me. Because.

It used to be very common for people to pass magazines on to neighbours when done with them. I think there would be no harm in asking if you could borrow it once they've read it.

Icanflyhigh · 03/07/2020 00:44

Just read it! They're not gonna mind!

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 03/07/2020 00:46

Ask to read it afterwards... definitely not before.

strandedatthedrivein · 03/07/2020 00:47

Ask if you could read it after them... perhaps then they'll say you can read it when you receive it? No harm in asking Smile

You are doing them a big favour looking after and passing on their post on a semi permanent basis. You also have a mutually helpful relationship so in that position of I was them I would have zero problem if you asked 'could I read that after you're done?' .... They may even say, read it whenever you like, but I don't think that's too cheeky

Unless you are answering the crosswords or cutting things out, how would it affect them? Especially as you do them a favour by keeping hold of their post for them for weeks at a time - just reading something before I had would really not be an issue - and if it were, surely just get it delivered to where you bare actually living?
