How to convince DH to put the toilet lid down before he flushes?!

It's driving me mad. I've asked 194748474 times and all I get is "yeah sorry I'll try and remember". He leaves the lid up, flushes, and the whole bathroom constantly stinks of piss. I've tried explaining that he's just coated the whole bathroom in piss particles, makes no difference. I've told him how important it is to me, makes no difference. I've told him that if he gets a virus including coronavirus he makes it a heap more likely we all catch it if the bathroom is coated in his piss particles, makes no difference.

When we eventually get the bathroom redone I'll be chosing the toilet on the basis of whether the handle is hidden behind the toilet lid.

I never close the lid to flush, didn't know this was a thing.

Eatsshoootsandleaves · 30/06/2020 19:25

Does your husband drink enough? I don't think anyone in my home ever puts the lid down before flushing and our bathroom doesn't smell of wee. I didn't know it was a thing.

user1493413286 · 30/06/2020 19:26

I don’t understand why your bathroom smells to be honest

Tlollj · 30/06/2020 19:27

I always put the lid down. But I honestly don’t think it’s worth falling out over.
If his wee is that strong he needs to drink more fluids.

gamerchick · 30/06/2020 19:31

The lid is there to stop particles from shooting up and hitting the ceiling as well as coating everywhere. I watched a study once years ago where they showed what happens when people don't close the lid during a party. That shit spread all over the house.

I hope those who don't shut the lid after a shit don't keep their toothbrushes in the same room. Just what you want, brushing your teeth with your families shit particles on it.

Toilenstripes · 30/06/2020 19:34

Pee and poo particles flying up and coating your towels and tooth brushes 🤢 The problem is that he’s not grossed out by it. I wonder if there’s an article you could have him read?

PinkFondantFancy · 30/06/2020 21:40

Finding an article to explain it might help, good idea. And actually I think you might be right, diluted enough wee shouldn't really smell now I think about it.

It absolutely stinks like a public toilet at the moment Sad At least he's pretty good at aiming so I don't think it's from wee on the floor.

Genuinely have made it to my early forties and didn't realise this was a 'thing'.
Feel quite grossed out and upset that I've never realised nor been taught this. How did I not know ?!
I'm going to face an uphill battle getting the other grubbers in my house to start doing this, because they don't appear to know either Grin

rslsys · 30/06/2020 22:24

Unless your loo seat/lid is hermetically sealed to the bowl, closing the lid turns just the gaps between the lid/seat and seat/bowl into an aerosol.

Dinosforall · 30/06/2020 22:27

I don't bother because I read that the particles come out anyway when you next open the lid.

PinkFondantFancy · 30/06/2020 23:02

Hmm interesting on aerosol, I wouldn't have thought it's high enough pressure but that's not actually based on any science. Same with them just coming out again, surely they'd fly up, hit the lid and then sink down over the following few minutes.

I'm going to go on a mission to find some science, I bet someone somewhere's done a PhD on this Grin

@mulberrybag I reckon I got it off one of those 'how clean is your house' programmes where they get petri dishes and take samples from your bathroom Shock Like the others say, maybe it's not as clear cut as I thought though.

Yes, this. It’s better to close it AFTER flushing.
GinWithASplashOfTonic · 30/06/2020 23:11

Is this a thing?

Tbh in this house we struggle to get the men to put down the toilet seat down let alone the actual lid

justtmee · 30/06/2020 23:13

I don't bother doing this unless someone is actively ill. In my defence the toilet is quite far away from the hand towel, toothbrushes etc. Interestingly I always thought that the public toilet smell was due to the urine of multiple people mixing as the only time I'v noticed that smell in the house is when the water has been cut off and we've all had to use the toilet without flushing in betweenConfused

ImFree2doasiwant · 30/06/2020 23:15

I dont do this either. No smells in my bathroom.

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2020 23:16

If I find the lid down in our house I generally assume there's going to be something nasty lurking under there.

Usually it's only put down if someone sits on it to cut their toenails, but we all put it up again before we leave the bathroom.

IdblowJonSnow · 30/06/2020 23:22

I always put mine down and have pestered everyone else too. Stresses me out if guests dont put it down but I wouldn't say anything.
The next loo I get will also have a handle you can only get to with the lid down!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/06/2020 23:25

There's an episode of Duck Quacks Don't Echo where they tested this.
It was watching that that made dc always close the lid before flushing.

heartsonacake · 30/06/2020 23:26

We’ve never put the lid down in our house and it doesn’t smell Confused Think you have another problem there.

To be honest, it’s his home too. If you want to put the lid down then by all means do so, but I wouldn’t put up with being harassed and pestered about it in my own home.

MissPiggee · 01/07/2020 05:14

I thought most men were like this? something in the Y chromosome seems to be very averse to leaving the lid down. or am I being very sexist here?

Does anyone here have a DP who does put the lid down?

ZacharyQuack · 01/07/2020 05:41

If I insisted that everyone put the lid down when they flush, no one would ever check for skidmarks.

Redcrow · 01/07/2020 06:01

It really grosses me out when people dont close the lid. I was glad when dd toilet trained when she was really small so I could say to dh "the seat needs to be down or she will fall in and you may as well close the lid while you're on"

stellabelle · 01/07/2020 06:05

Nobody in my house does this and my bathroom smells fine. If yours smells of wee you've got some problem which isn't related to the toilet lid.

CrystalMaisie · 01/07/2020 06:08

There’s videos on U tube if the visuals might help.
