Do you believe in life on other planets

DH and I regularly have this argument.

I think the universe is so vast it's illogical to think this planet contains the only sentient life.

He says that the existence of life on this planet is a blip and various scientists have set out the criteria for life elsewhere and there is no indication at all that these exist anywhere else.

I don't mean ufos or little green men or anything. I just mean any kind of intelligent life.

There must be some intelligent life out there in the universe (as there’s bugger all here on Earth)!

I think there's lots of life on other planets, maybe intelligent life in a distant galaxy

With all the millions of stars out there, I find it impossible to believe there's only one solar system with life. Most likely there are other intelligent lifeforms.

I think it is pretty much impossible that there will ever be contact.

I like this quote from the late, great Carl Sagan

“The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space“

I agree with this. There are countless solar systems and there must be at least one other with the conditions suitable for life. But the chances that our evolution as intelligent life coincides with theirs is so unlikely. Humans have only been around a few million years and are unlikely to be around a few million more. In the history of the universe that is such a tiny timescale.

And even if there was intelligent life at the same time as us, it would be too far away for contact to ever be made, even by radio or similar. Even the closest star is 4.2 light years away. That's a pretty slow conversation by anyone's standards!

Of course the universe will be teeming with life.

There are apparently (I had to Google) a minimum of 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets orbiting stars in the observable universe.

Anyone who think that only a single planet in the entire universe has sentient life is ridiculous.
