Petrol station payment arrangements since lockdown

I have driven so little since the start of lockdown that I have not had to fill the car up once. (Yes, did end up with a flat battery, but that is now sorted.) However, am due to make a long journey next weekend which will definitely require at least one petrol stop. That got me wondering: have petrol stations changed the way they take payment (eg opening up the out of hours window during the day so that people don't have to go in the shop if they don't want to) or are arrangements the same as pre-lockdown?

I use a tesco one and it is the same - pay at pump or in the store. The store has a queuing system and they have screens at the counter.
There is never a queue though as people are usually in and out quickly.

Our little local one is operating as normal

Well my trip to get fuel wasn’t successful first attempt as I couldn’t get the flap open. I assumed it had got stuck as not used for so long and went home where dh diagnosed the problem as me having locked the car and apparently the flap won’t open if the central locking is locked. Who knew?

Anyway I went back, filled up. Petrol station working same as normal, went inside.

Shell, Esso and BP all have pay at pump apps, you do from your phone before leaving the car. No need to go in the shop and limits you to just touching the pump handle

Thanks all. Would prefer to avoid going in, so pay at pump app sounds good!

All petrol stations I have been to since lockdown are providing plastics gloves by the pumps and expect you to wear them.

If you're not planning to go in to pay this might not matter, but depending on how far you are going you might be interested to know that I have found loos open in every petrol station I have tried!

Shell have an app. Link it to a card or Paypal. Pay while in your car.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/06/2020 16:22

Supermarkets are just pay at pump, no app required.

I been using morrisons. It has been as normal throughout lockdown (I still drove to work everyday throughout this so had to fill up every week)
They have screens up in the garage wherE you pay, but other than that it is nice and normal (apart from I sometimes have to queue out the door if it is a bit busy)

sooveritalready · 27/06/2020 16:59

@BarbaraofSeville the apps mean you don't have to touch and use the pay at pump keypad and card reader, if you're wanting to minimise contact.
