Trying to find a children's adventure book

Ok this isnt much to go on but it's really frustrating me

I remember reading a book or a series of books when I was younger

All i can remember is there are 2 (i think) boys who somehow end up on a ship accidentally with a really awful crew who treat them terribly..they might be pirates. One gets locked into a crate as punishment of something..one has or is threatened with the cat o nine tails and one is made to climb the mast.
One of the boys is called Hal I think and the author I think is male..willem something.

I know it's not much to go on sorry.

It's not enid blytons the ship of adventure I'm reading that at the moment

Sounds like one of the Willard Price 'Adventure' series, maybe Whale Adventure? Hal and Roger are brothers and the main characters, so sounds like it could be a good bet!

Roger has to climb the mast to get into the crows nest and is told to go over the outside (more dangerous) rather than through a small hole 'I'll have no lubbers on my ship' (or something).

I did love these books, although never read the whole series.

There are some new ones out you know. Written by a difference writer but under the name of Willard Price.

Definitely Whale adventure.
