UPVC doors expanding in heat

I wasn't sure which topic this should go in, sorry!

Our back door is UPVC and is currently in full sun. I've just opened it and now can't shut it as it's catching on the bottom of the frame. I seem to remember it doing this before (although not as seriously) in hot weather.

Does anyone have any advice? If I leave it until the sun goes will I be able to close it again? I'm worried about waiting til this evening and then being stuck with a door that won't close all night...

Thanks for any advice. We've been in the house for a year and didn't install the doors ourselves.

This happened to us last year and yes we had to wait a few hours but could eventually close it about 10pm.

Our patio doors do this. Yes we just leave them until the sun's gone in and generally they are ok. Still need a bit of a firm push iyswim.

Mine does this, too, and isn't in full sun. Sometimes, if I lift it and slam, it'll shut ok. Sometimes I have to wait for it to cool down. It does always go back properly, eventually...

A fairly frequent occurrence here - but always resolved by bedtime.

Thanks that's very reassuring! I'm having visions of myself sitting in front of the door all night...hopefully it'll close later. I just tried to slam it and it's really catching on the bottom so I hope I haven't damaged it.

Not helpful right now, but I replaced mine with composite. Sits in full sun and will still open and close with ease.

Mine used to catch near the handle, using a knife to just push the frame out a little, when closing, helped.

Trufflepuffpuff · 24/06/2020 15:49

Thanks, it's catching on the bottom of the frame and I'm worried about damaging the hinges from trying to slam it, but I might try a knife later. It won't close at all at the moment.

@TheDoctorDances thanks, it's pretty annoying so I may look at replacing in future so that's good to know! For now, I'm worried about whether I'll be able to close it tonight and go to bed...!

Reporting back for those dying for an update! The door indeed shrunk back when the sun went in and it's closing alright now. Thanks for the tips! I also recommend spraying with cold water to cool the frame a bit.
