What was it like ?

Hi
I have yes.
First time after an all nighter in east London. His car was an estate so plenty of room. Pretty hard tho and knobbly.
Second time after a gig. Had stashed car somewhere out of sight in car park. Got in back, got blanket on, curled up.
It's cold, cramped and a bit grim. M&S coffee went some way to sorting but still.
Worth noting it not legal, if you're over the limit.
I'd do it again, but only if I were sure I'd be safe.

6demandingchildren · 23/06/2020 16:51

I have done it a few times, first time I didn't get much sleep, the second time I had a bigger car put the rear seats flat and put a single airbag through the boot onto the back seat, it was so much better.

Newjez · 23/06/2020 16:52

I used to sleep in my car alot when I was young if I didn't want to drink and drive.

It was an old style vw beetle.

It was very cramped. I'd defo suggest using a bigger car.

FizzyPink · 23/06/2020 16:54

Yes once when I was about 17 and fell out with the friend whose house I was supposed to be staying at.
I was extremely drunk and spent all night being terrified the police would arrest me for being in the car and drunk. It was also January and bitterly cold, not a nice night at all!

TakemetoGreeceplease · 23/06/2020 16:57

Yep, when a friend and I were wild camping and convinced an axe murderer was trying to get in our tent, we bolted and slept in the locked car Grin

LemonySippet · 23/06/2020 17:01

Once, at the Reading Festival on the penultimate night, the zip broke on our tent so we laid the seats down flat in the back of the car and slept on the flat bed. The condensation was horrendous. The last night we packed up early and went to a Travelodge. It was bliss!

MysweetAudrina · 23/06/2020 17:03

Yes once when dh and I were dating and we decided to drive to France. We didn't realise it was Bastille day and we got so excited when we arrived late and mont st Michelle that we didn't book in anywhere and couldn't find a vacancy between there and st malo so we drove most of the night and then pulled up to the beach in st malo and slept there until the morning.

PaperMonster · 23/06/2020 17:06

Yes. In no hurry to do it again.

oldshoeuk · 23/06/2020 17:07

lots of time, but hate it. I much prefer to sleep on grass behind a hedge or somewhere quiet. Never had a problem with humans, but beware cows!

listsandbudgets · 23/06/2020 17:07

Yes when I was about 19. It was a mini. There were 2 of us.. suffice to say it was the first and last time I ever slept in a car!!

IAintentDead · 23/06/2020 17:13

Horrible

Over 50 years ago and still remember how uncomfortable it was. Was daft enough to do it on 2 separate occasions.

It was the back of an Estate so it wasn't the room. It was just so hard, so damp from condensation and so bloody cold - even though it wasn't that cold outside.

JacobReesMogadishu · 23/06/2020 17:16

Yes, I’m front seat. Front seat reclined back as far as it would go. Had a sleeping bag. It was fine.

zebbyzebbo · 23/06/2020 17:16

At an 18th birthday in a very small backseat with two friends. It was extremely cold and uncomfortable and I would not want to do it again.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 23/06/2020 17:19

Yes, the dips in the back seat were not comfortable. I advise getting one of these:

Sorry, not wearing my computer glasses.

Air bed for back seat of car

plominoagain · 23/06/2020 17:22

Have been doing it all through lockdown on and off ( couldn’t get hotel in London, couldn’t stay at shielding relatives like I would have normally, too far to drive home safely after nights and no way getting on the tube ) and it’s not that bad . Either stretch out in drivers seat with pillow and duvet , or curl up in back seat like dormouse . In a secure compound so not concerned re safety . Then wake up , nip up to petrol station for a coffee , and food , back to work , shower and good to go . Easy. There were about a dozen of us at one point doing the same

TitsalinaBumSquash · 23/06/2020 17:23

Oh yes, plenty of times as a wayward teen, I'd go to under 18 nightclub events and tell my mum I was staying with friends and then sleep in the car of whichever young man or woman who would have me after continuing the party until the early hours.
I recall it being cold and cramped, I also woke up very far away from home at times and had to speak very nicely to a train driver or 2 to let me bunk the train home.

WhatHaveIFound · 23/06/2020 17:23

Yes, we wanted an early start climbing Snowdon and couldn't find a hotel nearby. Unfortunately there were loads of people doing the Three Peaks walking through the car park all night so not very restful!

TheMandalorian · 23/06/2020 17:33

Once on the way to the alps with 3 other people. Not comfy and couldn't put the seat down. Why we didn't bivvy on the grass I do not know. Bonkers.
I suggest some sort of airbed in the boot with the back seats flat.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/06/2020 17:36

My dp’s had a car with a camping body, so the front bench seat (yes, I’m that old) folded down and I think the back seat Slid into the boot. We all kipped down (I was a tiny five year old) on overnight trips. There was a lot of muttered swearage from df the next day.

iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 17:37

Only once. I had moved out of one rented house and into another and there was a discrepancy of a day. It was awful and I was terrified Grin

crimsonlake · 23/06/2020 17:38

Yes, decided to go to the beach after we had been in the pub...30 odd years ago when there was not so much awareness about drink driving. I might add I was not the driver.
Slept all night in the front seat in some deserted car park I think, well I use that term lightly, then spent the day on the beach.

mylittlesandwich · 23/06/2020 17:41

Once, we went camping and the tent leaked so we all piled in the car. It's doable but not the most comfortable. Also it gets colder than you think so sleeping bags or blankets are needed.

Northernsoullover · 23/06/2020 17:42

I did 3 nights in Glastonbury in a car. We arrived all excited at 6pm on the Thursday not realising that you parked on site. We took our tent to pitch leaving all our other stuff in the car and by the time we found somewhere to pitch it was late and we wanted to enjoy a few beers. By the time we arrived back at the car we decided to sleep there.
Next day, I kid you not we could not find our tent.
Whether it was pinched or we had completely lost our bearings we will never know but we spent the rest of the festival commuting to and from the car park.
There were 4 of us in a 3 door hatchback. It was absolutely awful. None of us could lie flat and I was not popular each time I needed a wee and had to disturb the person in the front. We decided by the Sunday evening to go home.

happinessischocolate · 23/06/2020 17:48

Yes loads of times, I can sleep anywhere, when I had to move back in with my parents who lived miles away from my social group I used to go out to the pub and then back to house parties and when I'd had enough I'd go sleep in my car, wake up the next morning and drive home. I used to park in a car park off the high street, I overslept one Saturday morning, and woke up to find the car park had got packed whilst I'd been snoring away.
