DVLA - exchanging EU driving licence for UK licence

Hi - has anyone done this and how long did it take?

Also, my EU licence had expired in 2018, but has no endorsements or anything like that - and is a full clean licence. I read nothing in the literature about the old licence having to be in date. Would anyone know anything about that? It's been maybe 2 weeks now, so I'm hoping they're not going to return the whole lot saying they can't process it as it's out of date.

They seem to have reopened their phone lines today so maybe try one of the numbers on their website now
What number have you tried?
I've tried 03007906901 03007606902 and tried the line for if you're ringing from outside the UK 00448443069203 (that one doesn't even ring). I'm in the UK.

you can only renew your driving licence in the country you are officially residing in.
you can't renew a, say polish, licence of you live in the uk.

Thanks for the link @LockdownLoppy but I'm exchanging an EU licence for a UK one, as I'd need to travel to Ireland to renew my Irish/EU licence.

I'm not likely to be driving in the next year anyway (unless I take a fit of joyriding some night), but it still would be nice to have - particularly since it cost me £50 to apply for the exchange.
Obviously I'd prefer an EU driving licence, but can't quite do that in these times.

Also - as I explained in one of my posts, I hate carrying my passport around as ID as it was nicked out of my handbag one day that I was carrying it to register with a GP, so I'd prefer to just have the driving licence to use for ID. I'm not sure whether the Irish EU identity card counts for much over here as it doesn't state your date of birth and it obviously states my former Irish address.

Hey OP, what ever happened with this? I am in a very similar situation and would love to know if/how you resolved this. Cheers!

Just in case anyone finds this thread in the depths of Google searches trying to figure out if this works or not, I can confirm that it does. Sent away my expired Irish licence and received back a fresh new UK one 6 weeks later, as there were delays delays from covid.
