Microsoft Teams is going to make me cry with rage

DS has to use it now for school. Neither of us has a clue. Is it me or is it useless? Whoever says on the advert that they are living on Teams must be a poor soul or a liar. It's just a mess. Notifications for everything that happens, whether it's relevant or not. How are you meant to find anything a teacher has said in the screeds of daft messages and emojis from children who are just getting the hang of it themselves? I feel rudely yanked out of the cosy world of a small primary school and thrust into the roiling cauldron of a big high school, and it's my job to help DS through this!

Even their tv advert annoys the crap out of me.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/06/2020 15:31

Hate it, prefer zoom but apparently it's not as secure

TWBDT · 15/06/2020 15:33

You can adjust notification settings so you only get notified for certain @s support.office.com/en-gb/article/manage-notifications-in-teams-1cc31834-5fe5-412b-8edb-43fecc78413d

You can go into settings and change the notifications settings ( top righthand corner).

Ask the Teacher to set up a channel that can only be edited by them or put the info into a doc saved on the files tab where it can't be swamped.

you are right it takes a little time to get used to.

dobbyssoc · 15/06/2020 15:40

I have to use it for work. I hate it so much! I much preferred Skype business but nooo they had to change it!

AssangesCat · 15/06/2020 15:43

Thank you! I'll cut down the notifications. I need to help him get used to using you so I was encouraging him to check notifications but there were just so many pointless ones.

I am finding it hard to adjust to the shift from primary to high school. There are more kids in his year than there were in his entire primary school, so I despair slightly of building any relationship with teaching staff. Also, he's not in a feeder school for this high school, and the school are taking questions from the feeder school Parent Councils, so we're not in that loop. To be fair, they did say to we could e-mail them, so I'll suggest there is a dedicated channel for essential information.

Oh and we haven't even got into using it for video yet! This is all messaging so far.

I use MS Teams for therapy sessions and it has an uncanny knack for freezing at the exact worst moment of the session.

BlueJava · 15/06/2020 15:57

I think YABU, perhaps look for a youtube video to help if you are having particular issues? I use it every work day for up to 10 meetings across various time zones. There is an occassional glitch but I think it works well. You do you have to spend a few minutes getting used to it though. But dedicate 30 mins tops and you're there.

I much prefer Zoom. I’m using Zoom, Microsoft Teams and google meet at the minute. It’s bonkers.

AssangesCat · 15/06/2020 16:09

Thanks for your support @BlueJava but it's not an AIBU, and what is more, we're not using it for video meetings. I'm skyping and zooming away quite happily. It's not a particular issue, it's the whole damn thing. He's on three teams, one of which has about 15 channels going on. How do we stay on top of this?

dreamingofyellowandnavy · 15/06/2020 16:15

As a teacher I hate it. Only kids who speak get seen. The quiet one are never seen. It's shit!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 15/06/2020 16:43

We get the joy of Teams starting this week for Dd in year 10 lessons.
Zoom we get, we have weekly family meetings on it, sis in another country, and my 80 mum can even use it, so easy.

SouthWestmom · 15/06/2020 16:48

I hate it. Ds is on a chrome book and can't upload documents as we have no clue how to move from google drive. Can see it when you go to upload but is greyed out.

AssangesCat · 15/06/2020 17:06

Oh yeah, we managed to upload a document a couple of weeks ago, but apparently I was not the only parent close to launching the lap top out the window. In the end we took a photo of what he'd done on paper. But the options in assignments to upload and hand in took so long to load I didn't actually realise they were there for several hours. I thought it was a blank page until we left it alone for long enough for the rest of the stuff to load. There was no icon to tell us it was still loading. Since then we've managed to scan stuff in. Part of the problem is these are kids who have always done their schoolwork in jotters, whereas Teams would probably assume you create your work online.

OP posts:
BlueJava · 15/06/2020 20:40

Ah I see OP, that's a different problem. Maybe the school and they way they are using tech is the issue not teams itself. Perhaps approach the school with a statement of the problem. Perhaps they are using too many channels - because obviously if you have to monitor 15 of them that's way too many. They perhaps don't realise this and need to be helped to help you better.

DrDreReturns · 15/06/2020 20:49

Well I like it, perhaps because I've been using it for ages at work.

KenAdams · 15/06/2020 20:53

I love it. The app is miles better than the browser version though so try that.

Okidokey · 15/06/2020 21:27

My daughter uses teams for school on her Chromebook. I downloaded the app onto my phone so that when she has to upload a piece of work that's in her book or on paper I can just take a photo and upload on my phone, I find that much quicker. We have got used to it now but did find it a bit bewildering to begin with!

WotsitWiggle · 15/06/2020 21:32

@Okidokey my DD has a chromebook too but a lot of her work is completed offline. I hadn't realised I could sync the app on my phone though. Presumably I need her login details?

SouthWestmom · 15/06/2020 21:53

Okey there's no alternative is there?
It's so frustrating. I have teams app but it's for work and I darent try to have both. Maybe I could get him to put the app on his phone. Genius.

Okidokey · 15/06/2020 22:12

@WotsitWiggle yes you do need login details but it's super easy to set up and use on mobile
