What kind of bed is your 11-14 yr old in?

We need to upgrade DS(4) from his toddler bed. I’d like to get something with as much longevity as possible. We’re thinking cabin bed as his room is small, but do these become horrendously uncool for older boys? What’s the best option?

Thanks in advance!

We got DS a cabin bed when he came out of his cot bed aged 5 but then replaced it when he was 10 as it was a pain to change bedding, clean under etc. He wanted the same one as his older sister, which is a day bed from Ikea that converts from a single to a double .
However, if the room Is small it might not be an option

My 11 YO has a double bed but this is on the understanding that visitors stay in his room and he goes on a blow up bed. Works for us Smile

I haven't got a child of that age but we put ds (aged 2) into a kura ikea bed (low way) with the idea that when he was older it would become cabin bed with play area under.

He is now 3.5 and still along way from him being safe in a cabin bed as he would be in a&e from falling out of it.

If we're still in the same house when he is 11 I expect the kura will get replaced with a high cabin bed with desk underneath.

We got a high sleeper for my youngest as the room is pretty small, so it gives extra floor space (and can put a desk unit for studying when older). However he very often gets out the old toddler bed mattress (kept for den building/sleepovers) and sleeps on the floor under it instead - so go figure!

Ds(14) has been in a cabin bed since he was 5.
Hes only now starting to complain, but he doesn't have the space in his room for anything else, so he's stuck with it for now.

DS2 had a cabin bed from 5-10, then moved to a small double aged nearly 11. The double bed coincided with a house move though, the cabin bed didn’t fit as well in the new house due to the layout of the room. DS1 had one of the Ikea ultra high sleepers with a desk underneath from age 9-13 then he also got a double bed with the house move.

We had to get my 11 yr old / yr 6 DS a small double (4foot) bed as he was already 5 foot 6 and not comfortable in his single bed. He's now 13 and even bigger!

If you have the space (it's a foot wider than a single) I'd highly recommend a small double, he sleeps so much better now.

I have an 11 year old - he moved into a single divan when he out grew his toddler bed. He is now as tall as me, so the plan was to get him a small double his summer to hopefully see him through to adulthood. His room is big enough for a full size double, but with his desk and bookcase it would make the room too crowded.

DS won’t be getting a double bed for a while yet, we’re assuming that when his older sister is about 15 then we’ll need to switch rooms around and she’ll get a bigger bedroom, and he’ll move to hers which is a small double room. At the moment the largest room is the spare room which is also DH’s and my shared office; neither of the children are getting their hands on that Grin

Something like this would be my ideal but is that feasible as he gets older?

A king single. He's tall so we got it to accomodate his height. He'd like a wider bed though. I think the bed sizing in the UK is a bit different to Oz.

Cabin bed won't work for a teen boy unless they're quite small.
DD1 had a cabin bed til 10 then a double. She's 5 foot 8 at 11 so doesn't fit in a single.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/06/2020 11:09

My almost 9yo has a small double. (With rather handy storage underneath that we use for spare duvets, ski gear etc- the mattress lifts up.

Her room is small, but it's an oldish house so small is actually a decent size... She has a built in wardrobe, a bookcase, a desk, a bedside table and chest of drawers in there.

FromTheAllotment · 13/06/2020 11:27

Thanks all this is useful. I think we will go with the cabin bed but definitely keep it on the cheap side, as it doesn’t sound like it will last him to teens whether I want it to or not!!

DCs went straight from toddler beds to double beds. Their bedrooms are a decent size and their toyboxes go under the beds which helps with storage.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/06/2020 11:38

A small double I'm hoping it will last until he moves out
