What is the least shit storage solution for the space above the kitchen cupboards?

We have the best part of two feet high of space above our kitchen cupboards which is a huge waste especially as it's a small kitchen and we need more storage.
Obviously we could put in new cupboards but I don't have the money.
Are there any other storage suggestions that look less shit than just piling things directly on top of the cupboards?

If you’re any good with basic diy then I’d put sliding doors above the cupboards to hide things behind.

Paint the same colour as your walls or skirtings. Much cheaper than new kitchen cupboards.

I have the broom and confiscated toys on one part and saucepans on the other. Means I could turn the broom cupboard into a proper cupboard and use the space the large pans would otherwise take up for smaller things. The pans don't look too messy, but do need dusting before use!

Baskets. That's where I keep light things like teatowels, cloths, tupperware. I need to use a folding step to get up there though.

I meant tasteful plastic baskets of some sort and they will get dusty and greasy over time.
