Anyone renewed/applied to renew passport recently?

DC's passport runs out mid/end of July.

We were hoping to visit family abroad in the summer, for several weeks starting anytime soon/when travel is possible, to mid-August, returning in time for two week quarantine before (hopefully) school starts again in September. We would probably drive, avoiding planes and airports etc.

Just checked passport office and it seems that

  • no fast track available
  • generally applications take longer than usually (usual is 3 weeks) due to reduced staff

Has anyone got any recent experience of child passport renewal? How long did it take? For 'non-urgent' renewals, so no 'urgent business travel' or 'urgent compassionate travel' or such.

We are mulling if we should just go ASAP (as soon as rules and regulations in both countries and transit countries allow) and come back before passport expires, or send it off for renewal now and risk not being able to travel at all until it gets back in 4/5/6 ... weeks.

I'd rather not go straight away (we're both working from home term time so it wouldn't be a holiday, just working from home from a different place) but DH can't bear the thought of potentially not going until late July and only having a couple of weeks before needing to return. For all four of us, our mental health isn't too great and the thought of getting away to see family and be in a place where cases are as good as zero and lockdown has been largely lifted, is a bit of a lifeline we are all holding on to.

If we'd know the passport was likely to return to us (renewed) within three weeks or so, we'd feel a lot better about waiting a little longer.

Can you help us please with some recent experience?

TIA!

Child's renewal currently 6 weeks. All checks done just waiting for the passport to be made and checked.

My daughters recent renewal, child passport to adult, took only eight days. She did it online but had to send in her expired passport.

Coronacurls · 04/06/2020 13:52

My DD had exactly the same experience as Edith's. She did it online, including the photo, posted back her old passport last Monday and got her new one today.

I sent my son’s passport off at the end of March to be renewed. The new one arrived today.

Thanks everybody!
It sounds like if you did it around Easter time, you had a long wait, but those who sent it in recently had a fast response. Perhaps they are catching up with the back-log.
(Or maybe it is a regional difference...)

Any other recent experiences?

If you look on Twitter @passportwaiting they have up to date times

My renewal sent 27/5
Message today that they have posted it back!
Waiting for child renewal too but can’t expect much after a week.

Zebee · 04/06/2020 18:09

Sorry not sure if that is clear - new one has been posted back to me so just over a week to turn it round

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/06/2020 18:23

@zeebee was it sent to Liverpool or Durham? I’m waiting on one from Durham (posted old one on 21st, showed as received/ processing 26th May)

Zebee · 04/06/2020 18:38

Adult one sent to Durham, child one gone to Peterborough.

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/06/2020 15:12

My sons renewal was submitted on 6th May, documents received at the passport office on 16th May, started processing on 26th May.
His photo was rejected on 11th June and we had to take a new one. It’s been approved printed and posted today, 21 days since processing started and 41 total (our application was slowed as our first countersignatory hadn’t realised their own passport was out of date so we had to find another)

We ended up going for renewing DC's other passport (dual citizen) instead.

  • online form on a Thursday, checked and approved same day, information passed directly to embassy
  • contact with embassy on the Friday, appointment given for Monday
  • appointment on the Monday
  • Passport was created in home country, mailed to embassy, and mailed from embassy to us. It arrived on the Saturday.

9 days altogether, despite posting from abroad. Amazingly efficient.
Now that the relevant borders are open and transit/travel is allowed, we can start explicit planning!

Thanks again everyone for your replies, it helped us decide to go for the other passport, which proved to definitely not have been a mistake.
