Best pet

Could I ask for a recommendation on the best pet to have please?

My DD7 has been begging for one for ages and has just adopted a dead bumble bee she found - called it Honey and made it a home!! Realised she really really does want one!!

I'm allergic cats. My family all have dogs, but we're out working a lot, often 8am-6pm. I had hamsters as a kid but recall them sleeping all day.

What would you suggest as an easy to care for pet that DD can love? Thanks

No expert in this, but our Guinea pig lived indoors.

Guinea pigs for sure. If you look after them well they are affectionate and playful.

There are some cats that are suitable for allergy sufferers

Our guinea pigs live indoors - they’re lovely and a real part of the family.

We have both rats and guinea pigs - both are great pets and both are better kept indoors.

I would say guinea pigs are probably better if you don't have lots of experience with pets. Rats are fantastic, but they do require a lot of mental stimulation to keep them happy.

To add - our piggies live in the living room. They have a run to go in the garden during the day when the weather isn't too bad.

Giant rabbits are great pets, too big to be picked up and therefore scratch, ideally need to be kept in pairs. Guinea pigs are a good shout. My indoor cats are fab though, fantastic with the kids, snuggle up with me on the night etc couldn't be without them

A pony, huge rewards and they're highly unlikely to wee on the carpet. Fit in around work, great fun just generally one of my favourite pets!

My sisters guinea pigs live indoors and I think it makes them much friendlier as they get loads more attention ,are used to all the household noises etc . They go out on the grass in good weather .

I do love the sound of guinea pigs. I think they'll be ideal. And keeping them indoors does seem best - for the social aspect as well as keeping them safe. However I don't think our house is large enough. Or rather, I can't imagine my DH being willing to relinquish enough space to a large cage! He will take some convincing.

Thanks for all the replies.

Guinea pigs. Ours live indoors and have the run of the sitting room in the evenings. I'm currently sat on the floor and one has climbed on lap for a cuddle. He often sits on my daughter's lap while she's doing school work. The other one loves to run, he sounds like a herd of elephants thumping across the room 😁 . They should be in pairs or larger groups and need a cage bigger than the pet shops will sell you, the bigger the better. Look into c&c cages. Also for guinea pigs try to get from a rescue rather than a pet shop if you can.

Gerbils are lovely! Very cute and they don't sleep all day like hamsters. They are very clean as well.
