Talk to me about painting kitchen cabinets

I don't like our kitchen cabinets. We want to re-do our kitchen but not for a year or two. So I'm thinking I could repaint the cabinets and get new handles for now.
Pictures in pinterest look great but I would like to hear from real people
Have you done it?
How was it?
What paint did you use?
What to do?
What not to do?
Any tips?
Is this madness and should I put my paintbrush down right now?

We had ours done 9 months ago by someone suffolk based - He took off all the doors and sprayed them and hand painted the rest. He used a swedish paint i think - looks great and cost around £2k.

Photo attached - It was all oak coloured before so had a mixture of green and off-white.
