Should I tell my manager I have a job interview?

I don't know whether to tell my manager I have a job interview because in the kind of job I'm in, they often offer you it after the interview and then obviously they want to contact your references and last time I changed jobs I didn't tell my manager and then I ended up having to tell the new job that I hadn't told my manager I had a job interview so could they wait to contact her until I told her which was awkward and then I had to rush to go to my manager and say oh by the way I've been for a job interview and I've got the job and can you do my reference please which didn't feel great.

Advice please!

If you're offered the job I'm sure you can ask them to hold off on referencing for 24 hours so you can formally resign.

I don't understand how this is different to any other way that people are offered jobs.

No, I wouldn’t.

If you are offered, just say ‘no problem, just give me 24 hours to let the referees know before you contact them please’.

Good luck.

Teacher? Protocol for teachers is to tell them you are out for interview.

How will they know who to contact at that stage? I only ever put 'references available on request' on my cv/application so that they cannot seek refs without my express permission/when I get a firm offer.

Just do what everyone else does and tell your boss after you get an offer.
