Since DH and I can't go on our gorgeous Italian holiday this year, tell me your recommendations for lovely films that will bring Italy to us! I'm thinking lazy Tuscan days, beautiful architecture and scenery... Hoping it will keep the anticipation alive ready for when we can finally go!

Roman Holiday?

mavornia · 28/05/2020 14:02

Under the Tuscan Sun with Diane Lane is very easy to watch.

The Talented Mr Ripley has a completely different feel but is very evocative of the time period in which it’s set and is full of beautiful scenery.

Some of The Italian Job is set there. I've been to the Island where they filmed The Talented Mr Ripley. It's a small island off the coast of Sicily called Lipari. As the ferry arrived at the port all they needed to do was remove a sign advertising coffee and it was exactly as you see it in the film. Wish I was there now actually Smile

Not films but on you tube there are virtual tours of Florence the uffizi and loads more.
You can see the paintings without the crowds and have experts explain things about them.
Not as good as the real thing but gives you a culture fix

PirateWeasel · 28/05/2020 14:59

Oh these are brilliant, thanks everyone! Keep em coming! I know it's not Italy, but recently binged on the Durrells and loved the Mediterranean vibes! ♥️

Though don't expect 'Splendours of Italy' - The guy is cash strapped so you will see another side perhaps!!

CoolShoeshine · 28/05/2020 16:41

Not a movie but The Trip to Italy with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon shows some breathtaking scenery.
I also second Room with a View and Roman Holiday

Room with a view
It's on All 4 at the moment - it's gorgeous

TempsPerdu · 28/05/2020 16:45

Second Enchanted April (and the wonderful book). Gorgeous scenery (Liguria) and pure escapism. DP and I visited the house in Portofino where the book/film were set.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 28/05/2020 16:59

Room With A View and Il Postino are my tuppence worth.

Stealing beauty with a young Liv Tyler is a fab film for Tuscan countryside...also something to read?? I love Capri by Belinda Jones is a lovely light summer read (and the Holiday by Erica James)

bobbikato · 28/05/2020 18:29

Only You ( 1994 ) with Rob Downey Jr - starts in usa but Maria Tomesii goes to italy to find her soulmate .
Lovejoy - TV double set in venice .
the Scarlet and the Black - WW2 one with Gregory Peck - not too many bullets, lots of Rome landmarks .
the Agoncy and the Ecstasy - Charlie Heston as Michaelangelo
Hannibal is set in Florence but has a few nasty scenes .
