Worried my 13 yo has no friends

I’ve always been concerned about my 13 yo ds. He’s always been a bit awkward socially - he gets a bit silly and when he was in infant school he used to let his anger take over and hit out. He’s over that now. Now he’s at secondary and I can’t really set up play dates etc I’m worrying even more. Today I sent him out on his bike and said he could knock on a friend and chat in their front garden (socially distanced!). He went to someone’s house and they’d gone out with 3 others (2 of which are also supposed to be friends). Aside from the fact that you’re not allowed to meet up in a group at present (!!) I was really upset for him. He can be over the top and annoying but tbh no more so than other 13yo boys! How can I help him??

Get him a dog( if poss)...leave him to figure out his friendships for himself...don't convey your worry to him this is an added pressure for him...he will find his way...don't take other people's arrangements as personal slights often they really are not.

I agree with PP. There are lots of posts on MN from people worried about their 'friendless' teenage son or daughter.

It is a flaky age, a lot of people have 'friendless' phases. If your son seems happy enough I would leave him be. Being around school friends for 6 hours a day can be quite draining if you're an introvert, maybe he just likes having time at home alone to recharge.

Thanks! I guess he is happy! I don’t think he seems to mind generally. It’s just me worrying! It’s so hard as he’s always had one boy he’s wanted to be friends with - they were best friends in nursery but this friend has moved on and my son hasn’t.
We got a puppy in December! So he’s got that and us. He and his brother have become closer in all this (not that they’d admit it!)
