Elaborate plans to entertain the kids?

Has anyone gone to any lengths to do something for the kids that lasts a bit longer than an hour? I have a week off work next week and want to do something exciting as I have been a grumpy mare we would have been going abroad and now we are just going to be confined to the garden.
Over Easter we did a carnival and for VE day we did a party with party games, music and afternoon tea.
I wanted to turn the garden into a beach but am goig to settle for a mini beach and a water slide and fight.
Any other ideas?

I haven't done it but saw the idea somewhere:
Pirate and Mermaid day:
-Have a themed menu at each meal. eg:
+breakfast - 'giant pirate coins' (pancakes) with coral (blueberries)
+lunch- 'Maps'- Quesadillas with map markings drawn on in edible pen
+dinner- fish and chips
-have a treasure hunt
-'walk the plank' balance a plank of wood between 2 flower pots
-'musical shells' put pillows on the ground as 'shells'
-face painting

Build a massive den? See if you can get any big boxes off Facebook or local supermarket.

Camp out in garden, fire and marshmallows.
