Has anyone converted a garage into a granny annexe?

And can share their experience of it with me?

We've not long bought a house and recent circumstances mean I'd like to have to somewhere for a grandparent to come and stay. Bedrooms are all used (and DGM couldn't use the stairs anyway) but we do have a garage we could convert into a living/sleeping space of some description and our bathroom is downstairs so that would work well. Garage is detached so DGM would have to walk a short space in the back garden to reach the house.

Just after someone's brains to pick really Smile

No relevant experience but would caution you check out the planning situation early on

@Redkatagain true! Thanks for the advice Smile

Bumping for anyone else who may have some experience!

Most councils don't like separate ancillary accommodation.
Home office OK, but many don't like bathrooms in them

Yes vodka. I have. What do you want to know? Could PM you pics if you like?

Your Council planning dept should have guidelines or policies online

We had no trouble with planning because the building already existed. One upper window requested, not over looking anyone.

@HillieBoliday would love to know anything you'd be willing to share! This is in the very early stages of planing as we're in the middle of doing the whole house, but would still like to make it a priority.
Was it easier/harder than you thought? Any unexpected issues to deal with? Would you mind sharing costs? I can't imagine it would be too much but that may be naive...

Pics would be great too if you wouldn't mind Smile thank you so much!
