Is it your heart rate that burns calories?

My fit bit calculates calories burnt based on heart rate, is it actually the heart pumping that burns the calories?

So if I watched a scary film that made my heart pound, or ride a roller coaster, or drank a realky strong coffee or anything else that raises the heart rate but isn't actual activity, do those things burn calories because the heart is beating faster?

Not planning to use any of this things as weight loss aids, I obviously just have nothing better to do than ponder random crap on a lock down Sunday.

Since mine is around 52 resting it would explain a lot!!

LycraLovingLass · 17/05/2020 17:10

Mine is low 50s at rest and I cant eat many calories if I want to maintain my weight.

My resting heart rate is 48 and I'm really fit a pretty slim size 8. I don't think you can blame your resting heart rate!

Isn't the Fitbit just calculating how hard you're working compared to normal using your heart rate?

My husband has SVTs and I'm sure he would love his heart rate to burn calories. Alas he lives his life in disappointment.

Calyx72 · 17/05/2020 17:37

I had covid, tested positive in April. Heart rate high at rest compared to normal (it's about 85 at rest just now) and up to 120 or 130 just getting up and going into the kitchen or whatever, this

Calyx72 · 17/05/2020 17:38

has been for 4 weeks now. Not lost a pound boooo!

mortforya · 17/05/2020 17:43

I'm slim and have been my whole life, I eat ridiculously bad.. 3 choc bars every day, massive portions of dinners, love sambos and rolls with lots of mayo and cheese amd my weight never creeps up.. My resting HR is always between 88-100..on excercise (which is very rarely) it can go up past 200

kirstie91 · 17/05/2020 17:49

My resting heart rate is 90 BPM and I am slim healthy size 8 with anxiety. I'm also only 25.
I actually wondered this but in response my body produces a hormone to make me eat more apparently 🤷🏽‍♀️

ShowOfHands · 17/05/2020 18:06

@mortforya what is a "sambo" apart from an offensive racist term?!

LycraLovingLass · 17/05/2020 18:11

So is the heart not burning the caloriws then?

Does anyone know specifically what the calorie burn process is? I am gueasing that elevated heart rate is a symptom of calorie burn rather than cause?

Reluctantbettlynch · 17/05/2020 18:16

@ShowOfHands really? you can't work out that's obviously meaning sandwich? Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/05/2020 18:19

Mines low 50s, I eat loads. I’m slim. Dh has af and tachycardia and is not slim.

HappyHammy · 17/05/2020 18:20

I thought it was your metabolic rate not your heart rate

ShowOfHands · 17/05/2020 18:21

Does it mean sandwich? No. I had no idea. I do know that I overheard the phrase used once and it resulted in a fist fight!

FuzzyPuffling · 17/05/2020 18:22

I didn't guess that it was a sandwich. I'd say "sarnie" as an abbreviation. I thought it might be some regional delicacy. 😕

Felipa · 17/05/2020 18:23

Sambo is a sandwich in Ireland

Esspee · 17/05/2020 18:25

How on earth do you get sambo from the word sandwich?

Felipa · 17/05/2020 18:40

No idea! You can also get Shambos which are bread in the shape of a shamrock

JellyfishandShells · 17/05/2020 18:46

Indeed - I’d have been a slip of a thing, ArnoldBee, if that had been true when I was still getting them. The relief of ablation.

Flamingodial · 17/05/2020 18:48

There was a study recently that showed that horror films can burn calories through increasing heart rate!

HauntedGoatFart · 17/05/2020 18:50

No, it's your muscles that burn the calories. Your heart rate increases alongside because it's supplying the muscles with the blood and calories. The HR is an indicator not a driver. That's why people with higher muscle mass have a higher resting metabolic rate.

snowone · 17/05/2020 18:50

Everything your body does burns calories - but an elevated heart rate ie. during exercise, will be an indication that you are burning more calories as you are moving your body more. An elevated heart rate due to a scary movie won't do the trick I'm afraid!

Thisismytimetoshine · 17/05/2020 22:30

How do you get sarnie? 🤷🏻‍♀️

mortforya · 18/05/2020 20:46

Thank you to all who realised I was not in anyway referring to anything racist, I have only ever know Sambo to b a sandwich, I presumed everyone had heard this term, obviously not, I apologise.Yes I am in Ireland and it is very commonly used here.
