Can someone help me understand BBQ gas bottles?!

My parents have given us their weber gas BBQ but didn't have a gas cylinder with it for whatever reason
We don't drive so can't go far, and I'm struggling to get my head around how to get a gas bottle and fill it with gas
I was directed to my local calor stockist on the website but all sites I've found say you need to return a cylinder in order to get the delivery - but we don't have one!
How do I get hold of a new bottle? Once I have can I just order online and swap it?

Sorry if im being a bit thick, I contacted Weber but they just directed me to the calor stockist so I feel like I'm going in circles

Have you rung the calor stockist?
You will be able to buy a full cylinder as a ‘new’ customer

Frozade · 16/05/2020 16:08

Ring the stockist, you will get a new one and then from then on you swop.

Calor are not delivering at the moment-we are in the same position

Loads of gas stockists are delivering. If you don’t have a canister to swap they will just take a deposit on a new one, it’s usually around £30-£40 depending on the size, plus around the same price for the actual gas.

TheFlis12345 · 16/05/2020 16:12

You don’t need to get it from Calor direct, there are loads of other companies that stock it. Just google bbq gas and your area. We are in London and got ours in less than 24 hours.

We got a new bottle including gas from B&M. You just have paper work to fill out/put in a drawer to forget. Most petrol stations have them too.

I've tried our local stockists and they all say not delivering new cannisters
I'll try again incase I've misunderstood

This is a stupid question but if I find somewhere I can get a new cannister for delivery will it have gas in it?!

I think we got our first one from B&Q, £80 and that was for the first bottle and filling.

WorraLiberty · 16/05/2020 17:06

If you have a Facebook account, ask in your local group if anyone has a spare empty bottle.

Loads do in mine and they're normally glad to get rid of them.

There’s no gas filling notion with these calor type gas canisters.

As TheFlis12345 points out, the idea is you take an empty bottle/canister (I’ll call it a canister) to the supplier and pay for a replacement, walking away with a full canister.

If you have no canister to replace , you have to pay a one off deposit for the canister as well as the gas, you walk out with a full canister.

I think I’m right in saying they tried to simplify the BBQ market by calling the canister ‘BBQ gas’ as Propane and erm, the other one, sounded a bit engineering/garage/workshop-ish.

Anyway, B&Q sell them, think they’re open aren’t they?

Thank you
We don't have a local b and q we can get to which is why I'm looking at delivery

Several garages round here sell them, maybe have a look at your local ones.

tanstaafl · 16/05/2020 18:10

Just back from shopping, noticed the local Morrison’s petrol station had the type of smaller canister which we had for our BBQ in green dual handled canisters called ‘Patio Gas’

The other type of gas to Propane is Butane.

More importantly, this BBQ you have been gifted, it does have the hose and connector included?

You might have to buy a canister that matches the connector type.
Would have thought the Weber website can supply that information.

Try gasbottlesdirect.co.uk

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 16/05/2020 21:04

You go and fill out a contract in the store. Works out about 70 to 80 for the first and 35 for any refills after that.

Stefoscope · 17/05/2020 10:19

Garden centres often sell them as well, if you have one nearby that is still delivering.
