Hi
I’m thinking of studying to become a social worker and wondered if anyone could give me some info on the different roles and what they entail. I have looked online but would like to hear opinions from people in this sector.
Is it a job you’d recommend?
Thanks

Soooo many roles:

Fostering and adoption - doing assessments on new families and supervising on going Foster situations

Looked after team - responsible for child in care

Child in need - responsible for kids who are at home but who might come into care

Residential care workers

Drug workers

School social workers

Mental health social worker

Independent reviewing officer - making sure the child is at the centre of the professional around them and things are done in time.

Working in CAMHS

Working in discharges in hospitals

... and many more.

While you do the course you will do two placements which will give you a good idea of what you do and don't want to do. You will meet many social workers who will give their opinions about teams etc.

Best job in the world, but in many teams its a lot of hours, lots of responsibility, a lot of 'taking your work home' emotionally (at least initially), without a lot of thanks.
