Has anyone's back problems actually been made worse by a mattress with individually sprung pockets?

We spent a small fortune on a mattress 2ish years ago that is supposed to be excellent for those that suffer with bad backs - one of those ones astronauts are purported to use, very supportive etc.

My lower back causes me all sorts of issues, made worse by sleeping on my front I was told, so this past week I have been forcing myself to sleep on my back, or on my side with a cushion between my knees. My back doesn't seem any better really, and I seem to have now done my neck in by sleeping at an odd angle.

Miserable with it now and feel 145 instead of 45.

Any experiences or recommendations? A massage is going to be my first booking post lockdown.

I found that a firm, orthopaedic mattress made me stiff and achey. I changed to a medium-firm and feel so much better for it.

Our orthopaedic one made my back and hip pain much worse. We bought an Otty hybrid one at the start of lockdown and the permanent pain across the back of my pelvis and sciatica pain down one leg is so much improved its insane. It's one of the pocket springs underneath and memory foam on top ones.

It's not been a universal cure all - but I've gone from needing painkillers every morning to get moving and out of bed to not taking them and just having a niggling awareness that there's a problem there.

You need a cushion under your abdomen when sleeping on front or side. Stretch before you get out of bed - hug knees to chest and keep them there for a while, then turn over and push your upper body up with hands under shoulders - or on your elbows if you're not flexible enough. Also, do yoga!

I’m absolutely convinced they make back pain worse. Ours is pocket sprung orthopaedic and very expensive, dh’s back has got much worse since we bought it, and I just find it horribly uncomfortable!

yes.
got individual firm single foam matresses for our superking. much much better. possibly because I can't feel dh moving about on his sidd at all.

Wow.

@momanda i cant get out of bed unless i hug my knees to my chest for at least a minute and another minute with my chin to chest, and yes yoga helps me loads.
