Surrogacy and Coronavirus, it never even occurred to me

As if the Whole surrogacy thing wasn’t bad enough in the USA I just read this really disturbing article in the Guardian www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/may/14/surrogates-baby-coronavirus-lockdown-parents-surrogacy?CMP=fb_gu&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1589482158

How sad for everyone especially the poor women and babies they have birthed.

How come so many of the parents are Chinese? Is it illegal over there?

Hopefully this will lead to a ban on commercial surrogacy.

Doyoumind · 15/05/2020 08:51

I'm no fan of surrogacy anyway but using a surrogate in another country feels particularly wrong to me as it's a purely commercial rentawomb with limited contact and a woman who must be desperate for money.

EachandEveryone · 15/05/2020 09:14

I know that surrogate was only 23. I’m so glad it’s not a popular choice over here.

I think that babies born in America are automatically entitled to citizenship, so it's an attractive prospect for the parents of the child.

EachandEveryone · 15/05/2020 21:34

That never occurred to me.

I'm in the US. This is really messed up. Another thing that goes on which really gets me is couples seeking to adopt who create Facebook pages and set up targeted ads to find pregnant teens with unwanted pregnancies. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some really vulnerable kids caught up in this too...

TheTiaraManager · 15/05/2020 23:58

Excuse my ignorance on commercial surrogacy, but is it common for couples in China to use US surrogates? Or is it just a coincidence in the article that the only country mentioned twice was China?

aurynne · 16/05/2020 00:11

Anything and everything can be bought or sold in the US. Semen, eggs, blood, a kidney... a baby. It's the result of a society and economy based on money over lives. That explains the situation they are in right now, and has explained it for a while.

EachandEveryone · 16/05/2020 09:42

I want to know the Chinese answer as well. Also is surrogacy banned in Israel. Is that why people are going to America?

I’m so glad it’s not done so coldly here.
