Movicol not working for an adult?

I’m severely constipated. Have been on and off for most of my life. Last week took an enema and thought that would be the end of it. Nope. Back to not being able to pass a stool. I have taken two sachets of movicol for a couple of days and nothing. Today i tried another enema and even that hasn’t worked! I’m getting increasingly stressed out. All other things such as prune juice, more fluids, more fibre, strong coffee etc have also all failed. Now what?!

Yes take more muvicol
I can’t taste it
I put it in water with a 1 gram dissolvable vit c tablet
Also look at what you eat
Since I changed to everything but kitchen sink muesli , nuts , seeds, dried fruit, fresh fruit
I’m going every day without muvicol
Once you go
Don’t stop muvicol
Keep on taking it for about 6 months..just cut it back gradually
Also up your magnesium intake
Concentrace is good for that
Going gluten and dairy free will remove any inflammation in the system if you are intolerant
You have to do it 100 per cent

Wow thanks for all your advice. I really need to change something. I know i don’t drink enough and have never have, i need to force myself to drink more. I am going to try some of the other suggestions too.

Mix it with orange juice - it’s slightly less revolting. I had to use about 7 sachets to get it to work - 2 did nothing for me.

user has a good tip. You need to shit with your feet on a footstool

Google squatty potty and have a look at the diagrams on how raising your feet makes it a whole lot easier.

Hi I'm I'm on it permanently just to keep.my bowels moving.
I take 3 to 4 sachets a day every day. If I get constipated I up it to 6 then 8 and so on.

I make it up as a shirt drink because it tastes so vile but then drink a whole glass of squash straight after to go above and beyond the recommended amount of fluid.

BreathlessCommotion · 14/05/2020 21:40

@Dinosaurus86 it has to be mixed with water or it isn't as effective.

Dinosaurus86 · 14/05/2020 21:54

I have to admit that I mixed it with orange juice (actually orange and carrot juice) in spite of the water instruction because I found it more palatable (and it worked fine for me)! But if not then you could always mix it with a small bit of water and then top up (well) with orange juice...

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/05/2020 22:19

We used to give my daughter chocolate flavoured in milk.

Our gastroenterologist suggested the colder the mixing liquid the better - store your mixing water/milk/juice iN The freezer.

You need to step it up daily- 2 then 4 then 6 then 8 and then back down..

Pigletthedog · 14/05/2020 22:25

My DD takes it. My understanding is that it takes all the liquid from your food to keep your stools soft, so you definitely need to drink extra fluids to ensure you're well hydrated.
Also, 100% mix it with water first, then add squash or juice or whatever. I think it affects how effective it is if you don't, because the medicine has to 'bind' with the water first.
Has it been prescribed to you OP? Just thinking is it ok to take it you're pregnant and why no one explained the dose to you if it was prescribed?

AntiHop · 14/05/2020 22:30

I use movicol daily and the taste doesn't bother me.

Bigkingdom · 16/05/2020 06:45

No it wasn’t prescribed but the pharmacist said it was ok to take. I am desperate. Took 6 sachets yesterday and nothing! Will have to take 8 today. How on earth is it not working?! I don’t get it

Keep taking it. If you have been constipated for a while it will take a while to soften the anal plug (sorry if tmi)

Stompythedinosaur · 16/05/2020 10:46

Sorry, I mean faecal plug

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/05/2020 14:13

I recommend the app yoga monkey. Theres a sequence for digestive problems.

x2boys · 16/05/2020 15:55

It will do it just takes time ,I'm sorry you have to keep drinking that revolting stuff but it does work.
