Hi, my 11 month old barely drinks any milk during the day but is up every 2/3 during the night for feeds. We tried to reduce his milk during the night but dropping 1 oz each night so we could hopefully drop is 2am feed which was recommended by alot of parents but it hasnt worked for us so im wondering if he isnt having enough during the day???
Its a struggle to get him to drink it during the day. On a normal day he will had...

Breakfast between 7/8am

9/10am a 5 oz bottle, im lucky if he will have 2/3 oz

12/1pm his lunch

2/3pm 5 oz bottle again im lucky if he has 2/3oz

5/6pm his tea

7.30pm after his bath he will have between 4/6oz of milk.

If this normal for a baby of 11 months to be dropping his milk or not? Just wondering if he isnt getting enough during the day and thats why he is wanting more during the night? He eats a good amount of food during the day along with snacks.

Thanks

My DD dropped her bottles at around 12 months. She’s 21 months now but her feeding routine has been the same since.

6.30 ish (or whenever she wakes) - 5oz of milk
8.30 ish - breakfast
12 ish - lunch
2.30 ish - snack
4.15 ish - dinner
6.30 - 8oz of milk

The times are not what I would necessarily have chosen that’s her mealtimes are nursery and we stick to them when she’s home. Milk is only when she wakes and before bed which I like as we don’t have to take bottles out with us anymore. We had a terrible time weaning DD (she refused solids until 11 months) but one day she literally woke up and refused the daytime bottles and started eating.

How is his eating? My dd is 11 and half months old and has 3 meals a day and snacks. We've already switched to cow's milk and she has 4oz in the morning and 4oz before bed. Prior to switching, she was having the same amount of formula but as she's eating so well, I wasn't worried.

As for the night feeding, a hv once told me they really don't need milk at night after 6 months old. Dd started taking a bottle again around this time so I'd asked for advice. She said it was probably a habit now and suggested switching to water to see. Well, she was right. After a couple of nights of offering water, dd started sleeping through again.

My 9 month old has three or four bottles a day. The main difference in our schedule to yours is that we always offer a bottle first thing on waking and then breakfast a couple of hours later. I generally work on the principle of him having food every two/three hours. The first bottle of the day is the only one that's drained generally. We also have a slightly later last bottle than you at about 8.30/9 but that reflects when DS goes to bed more than anything. Does he get a lot of dairy in his diet? I wouldn't be too worried if he's eating yogurt and cheese etc and drinking water with his meals. I agree that it's unlikely he needs feeding a night so just offering water in a sippy cup might break the habit.

By 11 months my little one was only having the morning bottle and night bottle I swapped the day bottles for a little snack instead off the milk aslong as they are getting stuff like cheese yogurts when you make scrambled egg etc you add milk so that all counts aswell to there dairy intake. Is the night time bottles maybe more off a habit than actually hungry for them? Is going cold turkey with them at night and trying a different method off trying to settle them when they wake a option? X

My daughter is 10 mo and hadn't had milk during the night since 12 weeks! This is her routine

8am 7oz
9.30am breakfast
12pm lunch
3.30pm 7oz
5.30 tea
7.30 7oz

She hasn't started nursery yet so this will all change but she is starting to
Not want all of her 3.30pm bottle now.

DS had definitely dropped most of his milk by 11 months, just a cup on waking and before bed. I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure your son gets dairy from yoghurt and cheese with his meals.

By 11 months you can also definitely be firm about milk at night - that's habit rather than need. I started giving water rather than milk around 8 months and DS stopped bothering to wake for it fairly quickly. Think we had about a week of rough nights and then slept through.

@Kirstie1703 that's what my dd did with the water in the night. Showed me she wasn't actually thirsty so, after a few days, she stopped waking! It does take a bit of patience and long nights but baby should get the message fairly quickly!
