What happened to norovirus and flu???

Our hospital board normally closes whole wards because of these illnesses on a monthly basis so patients transferred elsewhere.

So has anyone had norovirus or flu to your knowledge or has the whole hand washing, social distancing thing had a positive effect health wise?

I think it's had a positive effect.

The most I've known is a couple of people saying they had diarrhea a week or so into lockdown but they put that down to eating richer food or more snacks.

Thighmageddon · 10/05/2020 14:33

They're more winter illnesses aren't they and we're now late spring.

justasking111 · 10/05/2020 14:34

Who has had food poisoning as well?

One of the reasons (albeit a less obvious/minor one) for the lockdown was to prevent the spread of other seasonal illnesses that would have contributed to overwhelming the NHS. Personally I'm delighted not to have daily contact with snotty sneezing bug-ridden kids and their filthy little fingers all over every surface Grin!

justasking111 · 10/05/2020 14:47

The grandkids have never been so healthy not a snotty nose or runny nappy between five of them. Whereas between nursery and playschool they were always coming down with something. The mantra being it is building up their immune system.

Well excuse me back in the eighties when mine were small, norovirus, hand foot and mouth was unheard of despite the fact that they went to playgroup and nursery school.

What utter nonsense, of course it was around in the eighties.

Troels · 10/05/2020 14:51

We had Norovirus go through the whole building at work, both staff and residents at the end of March.
We were already on lockdown and it was over with quickly.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/05/2020 14:54

We've left winter snot, coughs & sneezes behind & are now firmly in to summer snot, coughs & sneezes with added itchy eyes & random outbreaks of hives territory in this house Grin this is mainly me, dc4(4) & dc5(2)

RoryGilmoree · 10/05/2020 14:54

Norovirus still exists. I had it about a month ago. Picked up in the hospital I work in.

Grasspigeons · 10/05/2020 14:54

Of course they were around but i remeber a different atmosphere in schools where children were kept off if they were ill more easily and with less penalties. I also remeber we had to wash our hands on arrival and change into indoor shoes. So i do think things spread less.

justasking111 · 10/05/2020 15:03

Yes the days when you could furlough a sick child without fear of a nasty e mail, letter. Common sense has gone out of the window. What part of my kid is sick so will not be in to build a marshmallow tower is such a problem these days.

If fewer people are in hospital right now it makes sense that they are not being overwhelmed by infections.

gower4 · 10/05/2020 15:38

National handwashing campaign.

scaevola · 10/05/2020 15:40

Flu would be ebbing anyhow.

Noro is probably down because of a) more handwashing, b) less eating out (inc school, and work canteens) and c) social distancing

CocoCorona · 10/05/2020 15:43

We’re heading toward summer so probably on a decline anyway. Just in time for wave 2 and the second lot of mass deaths of covid.

justasking111 · 10/05/2020 15:44

So lets keep up with the handwashing campaign, I wear gloves every winter shopping and out and about, then sling them in the washing machine. You see so many people sneezing and coughing into their hands then grabbing a trolley. Eugh...

People aren't mixing. Guess what social distancing works for other viruses too. Who knew? Hmm
