Questions to ask for VE Day memories

TellerTuesday4EVA · 05/05/2020 08:23

DD (7) is 'interviewing' my two grandmothers for their VE Day school work.

So far she's got:

How old were you on VE Day?
Did you have a street party?
What did you eat?
What is your favourite memory of that time?

Can anyone help me out with anymore? I don't know if it's lockdown or general mind fugue but I can't think of anything else to ask them. The guide is 10 questions, nothing to complex as it will be over the phone but both my DGrans are still very 'with it'.

Thanks so much in advance.

Did you listen to the king/Churchill on the radio?
What did your parents do in the war (if they were children)

Where were you when you heard the announcement?
What happened during the rest of that day?
Did you have family members in active service at that time?
Where were they, what were they doing, and his long before you heard from them?
Do you remember celebrations? What were they like?
How did other members of you family react to the news?
We’re there any immediate differences to day-to-day life, and if so what were they?
What long term changes started about then?

We are doing a bit of VE Day too.

What about:

Do you remember how you felt on VE Day?
What did you wear on VE Day?
Did you have a big street party where you lived?
Did all of the street decorations, flags etc stay up for a while after VE Day?
What happened the day after VE Day, did the party's continue?
What was it like at school during that time (obviously depending on age) and how did that time fit into school history?
Did life feel normal again after VE Day?

Can you remember any songs from that time?

What was the very best thing about the end of the war?

Do you remember food being rationed, and was what you ate different from what you eat now?

Have you kept anything (photos, notebook,) from that time?
