Taking the plunge with a toilet plunger

I need to unblock the toilet and now have a toilet plunger. Any tips on how not to get showered with poo gratefully received.

Have you tried pouring a few basins of water down? What's blocking it?

Plunge whilst flushing ,always works for me .
