I've become a bit addicted to online traffic CCTV images showing the deserted roads/shopping streets where I am. Yesterday DH and I decided to use our exercise to wander into town for the first time in 7 weeks to see it all in real life. It was so strange - a sunny Saturday in Newcastle city centre and we were able to walk down the middle of the main road, not one vehicle passed us. I took some pics which I'm going to print and keep for any future DGC! Here's some of them.

Do you have any photos you've taken of empty streets etc where you are? I'd love to see them, they're all eerily fascinating.

...and last ones.

Anyone who knows Newcastle will understand how strange this is. By this time (5pm-ish) on a Saturday these streets would usually be full of shoppers and people beginning their nights out and Exhibition Park would be packed, too.

I would but they aren’t.

Our street is quite busy, particularly with pedestrians. Live a few houses from a park which everyone has decided is a good place to descend upon. Never been so busy since we moved here 10 years ago ....... The local walks which were once isolated and felt quite off the beaten track are also starting to look quite worn-in. Is impossible to avoid people altogether when out no matter what time of day it is....

vanillandhoney · 26/04/2020 12:34

Nope, the area I live in is tiny so it would be too outing.

Fuckinellitsme · 26/04/2020 12:42

@vanillandhoney I NC'd to my 'don't care if I'm recognised NN' for this Grin

Nice idea OP, think I will take my daily walk into the city centre instead of more rurally today. As an aside,I went to Newcastle (from Ireland) for the first time in February, had a brilliant time, was really fun and will def be going back when all this ends!

Here, the further you get out of the centre of town the busier it is. The city centre has been dead for the whole lockdown but when we go for our walks closer to home the streets have been fairly busy, some evenings very busy, with runners/cyclists especially. I suppose people who used to go to gyms or whatever for exercise now need to pound pavements instead.

@Binterested that is bonkers Shock

@BigBairyHollocks I'd love to walk rurally but there's nowhere near me that I can. I miss the countryside so much, and the coast. It really is strange how the suburbs here are so busy yet the city centre isn't at all. Newcastle is fab - I'm not from here originally but I fell in love with it the first time I visited, then ended up moving here. You will be very welcome when you're finally able to return!

Kensington Gardens, Brighton. A pedestrian street that’s normally so busy with shoppers and tourists that you struggle to walk down it with a pushchair. Totally deserted at midday.

I know that street @donkey86. Incredible to see it looking like that.

Deserted streets you say? What are they???!! Not around my place!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 26/04/2020 13:44

My local small town was quite busy when I drove through on Friday.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 26/04/2020 13:46

I’d love to do this in London

Lifeaback · 26/04/2020 13:52

@Binterested wow Shock I haven’t ventured into town since this began and have been wondering what it looks like.... where I am (Balham) there seems to be more foot traffic than there would be ordinarily especially with the good weather!

These pictures are a weird mix between beautiful and eerie

www.tfljamcams.net/ is great for seeing what's happening in real time in London. Some of the streets look quite busy today but very centrally it's eerily quiet.
