Urgent - aspirin and breastfeeding

Tittie · 25/04/2020 18:00

I have a migraine and my DH gave me what I thought was paracetamol, but it was actually paracetamol with aspirin, so I had 2 x 300mg. I'm exclusively breastfeeding a 3 month old, and the packet says you can't breastfeed while taking it. Does anyone know how long I have to wait until I can feed again? DD won't normally drink from a bottle, and I've no idea who to speak to for adviceSad

Do you have any pharmacies near you that are still open that you could pop along and ask? Failing that I would probably phone 111 for advice.

If you took it 4hrs ago you are ok. There will be no aspirin in your breast milk.

Speak to a pharmacist.

Google shows a mumsnet thread where someone had the same issue

Also saw this ‘e BNF states that it should be avoided due to possible risk of Reye’s syndrome. Regular use of high doses could impair platelet function and produce hypo-prothrombinaemia in infant if neonatal vitamin K stores are low.
After 2-4 hours there is virtually no aspirin in milk
Compatible with breastfeeding if necessary at 75 mg daily, avoid as an analgesic‘ from here www.breastfeeding-and-medication.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/low-dose-aspirin-and-breastfeeding.pdf

Thank you for the advice. I searched for similar threads and saw really conflicting advice - one pp recommended waiting until the next morning!

Managed to find a pharmacy that was open and they said that as a one off, it's fine to breastfeed, but not to take aspirin again. This backs up the links you've posted - thank you all.

DH feels so bad, he was only trying to help.

If you have an issue like this in the future, if you message The Breastfeeding Network Drugs in Breastmilk Information Service on Facebook they usually get back to you pretty quickly. Wendy Jones is a pharmacist and is phenomenally helpful. Sadly a lot of pharmacists will say things are a flat out no when they aren’t.

When DS3 (10yo) was a 10 weeks old, I accidentally took an aspirin. I had a huge allergic reaction to it and had to be blue lighted into hospital. Fortunately I responded really well to the usual treatment (I think adrenaline, steroid, antihistamine) but they wanted to keep me in for the night to monitor me and have me reviewed by a cardiologist. They fetched a cot from maternity and we wedged DS into it, so he could stay and be fed. At no point did anyone say I shouldn’t breastfeed him and I had aspirin and a shit load of other stuff in my system. I’m sure it’ll be fine.

My problem was also caused by DH trying to help. It was the day after his vasectomy, so all the running around and carrying DS in the car seat was pretty uncomfortable for him.

Great advice @Bienentrinkwasser, I did give them a try just to confirm what the other pharmacist had said, and Wendy was fantastic.

Oh goodness @autumnboys, how stressful for both of you, and all that with a young baby too!
