Because they fit in with your idea of the type of person you are/want to be/used to be. When I was younger perusing someone's CD collection was an important part of getting to know them (and, if I'm completely honest, judging them), and I think that's why we hold onto them. Both my husband and I still have CD collections cluttering up our parents' houses (much better than cluttering up your own) which is obviously entirely pointless, but we aren't ready to let go of them yet.

because they are a useful backup of your music as the cloud is not reliable. Get a wallet storage thing and dispose of all the cases when the tip reopens.

I have all my vinyl from the 80s in the loft and no record player.Plus a huge collection of cassette tapes. I also have favourite DVDs and no DVD player as we had a new TV and the DVD player is too old to connect to it.

Won't be getting rid of any of it anytime soon, but none of it is needed. Confused

I just threw out a load. I struggled with it. I kept looking and thinking 'Sublime, that reminds me of that summer...' etc. Nostalgia gone madm But I hadn't actually listened to them in years, other than the car don't have any way too, and can download all the music on them. So they're gone.

Because they cost you money, and will cost to replace the music in different formats.

You need to change your mindset... Look at them as costing you storage space.

Get rid OP!! We moved house last year and used it as the perfect opportunity to get rid of all the CDs and DVDs. The good ones went into a wallet that lives under the stairs and hasn't been touched in the six months we've been here.

It's about letting go of that part of your life, which I'm presuming is your youth, based on the fact that you're old enough to even have CDs! I really think moving after ten years was the most cathartic thing ever, I got rid of so much tat that was cluttering up our home and the emotional baggage that came with it. For me it was mentally about letting go of 'before the kids' version of me.

I have my entire needlessly large collection of Duran Duran memorabilia still (and every bank statement since 1984 but that's another clearout to be done). Actually now we are in lockdown I was going to have a dig through it all. Don't know whether it will cheer me up or make me miserable.

Because you can’t get absolutely everything on Spotify or Apple Music? There are some tracks I have on CD that just aren’t available digitally. I’ve kept a handful for that reason.

BabloHoney · 23/04/2020 12:40

We got rid of loads when we moved but kept a selection of favourites. Do the 3 track challenge.. if you can name 3 tracks on it, keep it, otherwise.. get rid Smile

ClashCityRocker · 23/04/2020 12:48

We still have a stack of dh's old LPs.

He hasn't owned a record player for well over thirty years.

We've also got most of the same LPs on CD.

And still mostly listen to music digitally nowadays.

Boredofthisstagenow · 23/04/2020 12:48

Oooo, I was just thinking this recently too. I might try the 3 tracks challenge and for those I keep wallets too. It is hard to let go but they are just sitting there for no reason. Likewise the CD player on top of the bookshelf I haven’t touched since I moved 3 years ago!

TeapotCollection · 23/04/2020 12:50

I’ve still got cassette tapes 😂

Snufkins · 23/04/2020 12:51

Copy the music to your PC and iTunes then you can have all the music you want without needing to keep the actual disc.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2020 12:54

DH pointed out that if I don't sort all the 80s junk in the loft out our DC will have to at some point. Sad
