MarioKart help needed!

I can not be the only parent being thrashed at mariokart by my two primary aged children every day of lockdown! Please give me your top tips to help me up my game. I prefer to be Yellow Yoshi, but would another character help me be faster? Should I use certain vehicles and wheels? How can I best use the things I get in question mark cubes?

All advice gratefully received! Or commiserations from fellow losers! Thank you!

Mario is a good all rounder. The game favours you if you don’t play your best for the first lap too.

What system are you playing on?

Certain tracks have shortcuts, if you learn them you will have an advantage

Also you can hold banana skins or green shells behind you so they deflect some attacks

I need this thread in my life.

We got a switch at Christmas and I’m struggling to get used to MK8 after ten years of the Wii version!

Thanks for all the advice! I tried dry bowser but found I couldn’t be as nimble. Not sure if I need a lighter weight option and just master it. The pressing down at ‘2’ in the countdown definitely helps. I’ve been shown one shortcut by DS but it didn’t shave off much time as I think I stuffed it up somehow. I’m on a Nintendo switch, if that makes any difference!

I’m starting to enjoy the renegade roundup in battles. Hated it at first but getting into it now!

What are people’s favourite cups?

Yy to pressing and holding accelerate when the count down gets to 2 to boost at the beginning.

You can also drift round the bends by holding the shoulder buttons on the switch controllers which give you an acceleration boost when you come out of the bend!

It’s all about baby daisy lol. Not in that bloody pram though. The big wheeled kart.

Love mario kart but my DH won’t okay with me anymore due to mario kart road rage (his not mine). Many an N64 controller died at his hand. Thank god they weren’t as expensive as switch joycons.

Love this thread, DS always beats me!

Can someone please tell me how to hold a banana or shell behind me?

Always play the driver, cart and glider with the highest level and points available, not just your favourite one. Use your tickets to bump up their points to the max.

If you have a spare shell
or item don’t throw them all at once, keep one especially if you’re leading so if anyone throws anything at you you don’t get knocked aside, it acts like a shield.

Keep your spare Item tickets for the actual Cup races that your comparing points with your kids with - and don’t waste them. Only use them after you know the race well or have done it a few times.

Go in the straightest line possible around the course - I.e. don’t follow the curves , that’s the long slow route.

We have played family Mario every night since lockdown started. For the first few weeks I came 12th every time but am now coming a more respectable 7th. I’ve yet to beat the kids or husband but am doing better by: accelerating on 2 at the start, driving a car rather than motorbike, guilt tripping the kids if they crash into me and by having a glass of something to calm the nerves! I always drive as Peach but may try a heavier character. Hubby is always the big monkey thing and he seems to do quite well... Maybe bigger is better after all! Will be following for more tips.
