Anyone cut their DH's hair yet?

Just ordered clippers, picking them up from Argos tomorrow. He is expecting me just to be able to give home a trim, graduated like the barber does. I have no fucking clue where to start. I fear there will be a step, and possibly some chunks missing. I didn't sign up for this shit.

I've done DH and DS, both with my embroidery scissors. DH was easy as he just needed a trim and thinning out a bit; he has very thick dark hair. DS wanted a complete new style as he had long, blond, fine hair but wanted to go short again. The front looks good but the back is still a bit 1970's page boy as he got bored and wouldn't let me finish.
I'll have another go tomorrow.

I did my DHs. My cousin sent me this as a rough guide but i did 4 3 2.

I did my DSs too. I impressed myself! They both look pretty good!

I've been cutting dh's hair for about 4 years. I just do 5 all over to take the length off the top then 3 on the sides and blend it in. I watched a couple of YouTube videos. The first few cuts took a while but now it's a 10 min job.

Thereshegoesagain · 16/04/2020 23:16

I did. Just did a small cut. Number 7 at the back/sides took off about 3/4 on top and attempted to blend it. We were both relieved that it looked totally fine. I watched a couple of youtube videos and I've seen my son get his hair cut a million times, so I sort of knew what to do.
Good luck

YesItsMeIDontCare · 16/04/2020 23:16

DH did both mine (straight edge at the back) and DS's (No.4 all over).

He's pretty good at it tbh.

He shaves his own head completely though, so I don't have to return the favour. Thank god! 😁

SittingAround1 · 16/04/2020 23:17

Mine has asked me. I haven't had the courage to attempt it yet though.

crankysaurus · 16/04/2020 23:21

I did for the first time, got him to show me how the clippers work and I practiced in my arm a bit first. He did round his ears as we were both nervous about that. Turned out surprisingly okay overall, not like the badly shorn sheep I was anticipating.

Pelleas · 16/04/2020 23:27

I've been cutting my husband's hair for years with clippers. Start with the clippers set slightly longer than the longest part of the desired end result. Trim all over at that length and then work up from the back and sides with a shorter setting. Always start longer than you think you'll need because you can retrim but you can't put it back!

Bluebooby · 16/04/2020 23:30

My partner does his own with clippers. I usually straighten up the back. I think he does a number 3 (or whatever grade) all over.

VivienLeighsHandbag · 16/04/2020 23:32

I did my DH hair but it was grade one all over. Not much skill involved but bloody good fun and he now looks like he’s a hitman .

GreytExpectations · 16/04/2020 23:32

Luckily for me and him, my DH is capable of doing his own hair. Had been for years

Forgetaboutme · 16/04/2020 23:37

I did both my husbands and my sons.

Husband only let me do the back and sides so I gave him a number two and just blended towards the top. Looks pretty good for now but he doesn't trust me enough to do the top.

Son on the otherhand loves his haircut. He is 13 and asked me to shave the back and sides with a number one. He didn't want it blended at all. He has a big curly mop at the top. He loves it and it looks better than I expected tbh.

MuseumOfYou · 16/04/2020 23:39

Yes, did my DH. He normally has it cut with scissors on top but it sticks up at weird angles if too long and was starting to look like he was attempting a 'combover' - he has a rather high forehead... 🤭

I clippered it, 4 at the back, blending to a 2, and actually looks not bad, certainly better than it was. I think he'll be going back to the barber's in due course though.

MortyFide · 16/04/2020 23:44

Yep. DH attacked his huge Dr Snuggles 'fro with some clippers then yelled at me to sort out the back and sides. He looked like a goat had attacked him. I was a bit tentative at first but by taking it sensibly with a comb and clippers, bit by bit, the end result was actually quite ok!

GoFiguire · 16/04/2020 23:52

I started to cut my DS’s hair but he stopped me halfway through and wouldn’t let me carry on. Don’t know why.

rvby · 16/04/2020 23:52

I have done DP's. #2 at the back and around the ears, and then keep going as you switch the clipper guard from #3 to #5, slowly but surely until you get closer to the crown. Then scissors for the top. Just follow the existing shape of the cut and it's fine really.

There will be time for it all to grow back in anyway. It's more to keep him comfortable as he's never had anything longer than short back and sides.

Krazynights34 · 16/04/2020 23:55

Yes! I did my curly headed girl (not so happy wth that) and my DH who looks sexy as fuck (I have y issues with him) but damn I think I missed my calling

WheresMyAlex · 16/04/2020 23:55

I did my DHs, it came out surprisingly well, but a bit of a step at the back that I’ve struggled to get rid of. He’ll definitely be going back to the barbers though!

Easilyanxious · 17/04/2020 00:00

Just about to order clippers to do dh and eldest ds ,younger ds won't let anyone near his hair
Used to cut them years ago when money was quite tight but once whilst cutting my husbands the bit fell off and he had a bald patch at the back . He couldn't see it so I didn't tell him and left the people at work to tell him the next day .He's reluctantly letting me try again as his hair grows quick normally has it cut every 3/4 weeks and it's annoying him ., will try to make sure no bald patches this time

TreacherousPissFlap · 17/04/2020 02:39

I did DH's about 2!weeks ago but part way through the guard fell off and a little bit more hair than expected with it.
We are actually speaking again now Wink

Not yet but I’m going to this weekend.

I shall watch a few tutorials first, then we’re good to go! My mum used to cut my dad’s hair and my brothers’ so I have a vague idea of what I’m supposed to do. 👍

MortyFide · 17/04/2020 08:37
