I'm drinking more due to coronavirus.? I'm frontline, seeing this everyday at work. Trying to moderate but it's sometimes the only thing to enjoy in the day. (Note, not enough to be drunk or hungover, just more than it should be). Xx

I think a lot of people are drinking more. You need to consider this rationally. You clearly are a bit worried or you wouldn’t have posted. Do you have a bottle of wine a night? One beer? Six beers?

I know I am drinking more, probably two pints of beer a week, rather than one pint a fortnight.

WTF12345 · 11/04/2020 22:28

Half a bottle of wine a night I'd say with a couple of nights off. Xx

You aren't the only one.

You're not alone. Alcohol sales are up 22%

BBC article

Bobbiepin · 12/04/2020 07:08

If you know this is a temporary thing, you aren't craving/needing it to get through the day and it's not impairing your ability to do anything you should do then I don't think its problematic. It's obviously not healthy but in the short term people are turning to alcohol a little more.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/04/2020 07:13

Yeah I've been drinking more, but not a lot. So like, maybe 2 small glasses of wine some nights, a gin and tonic others, sometimes nothing. But it's all from my vast collection, I've not bought any extra. Sounds awful, but I love trying new stuff, but it then it sits for ages!

bettybattenburg · 12/04/2020 07:30

I'm having a small glass of spirits occasionally which I would never normally do but we have no wine. It's probably a bit more than normal as I don't usually drink in term time.

OpthalmosVerde · 12/04/2020 07:34

Not alone at all! I want to drink every night ATM, problem is I can’t drink (or at least really shouldn’t) the night before work and I’m now stuck working 6 days a week due to CoV. But that desire to just ease into relaxation once I’m home and take the mind away from everything happening beyond my living room. God yes. I’ve actually deliberately not bought any wine so I don’t give in to temptation on a school night. Working my way through my gin collection when possible though.

Personally I’d be fairly buzzed off half a bottle of wine though, that’s equivalent to 5 shots. If you’re in healthcare you’ll be well aware of recommendations around alcohol intake and health risks. Are you worried about your intake OP?

Mummyilovejokes1 · 12/04/2020 07:35

Yes me too!! I am probably having 2-3 glasses a night, i think for me the sunshine is playing a big part. I am not sure i would be drinking as much if it were raining and i was sat indoors 🙄
I went and brought 2 bottles of wine yesterday but also some lemonade to add to it as more of a spritzer, i had a few glasses last night but it was probably only 1.5 glasses of actual wine instead of 3!
I dont think we are alone in this!

Alonelonelyloner · 12/04/2020 07:38

I'm on nearly a bottle of wine a night.
Just this morning realised how crappy I feel.
You are definitely not alone.

INeedNewShoes · 12/04/2020 07:43

I usually drink a couple of evenings a week but I have had a drink every night for the past 3 weeks, ranging from 1 small glass of wine to half a bottle.

I've realised I'm going to have to rein it in as the amount is creeping up.

I teeter between a 'healthy' bmi and being in the overweight category. I don't really want alcohol to push me over the line permanently!

ScrapThatThen · 12/04/2020 07:54

What would be other nice rituals you could do to relax after work? Would a small bar of chocolate and a decaf coffee cut it? Could you swap to light 5% white wine or Beck's blue alcohol free lager (this worked for me). If you were going to cut down would you prefer to 1. Have some most nights but a strict, smaller limit 2. Have it on work nights but not days off 3. Have it on days off but not work nights 4. Have a strict 'only every other day' rule. I would address it now just because you matter and looking after yourself comes first, getting into unhealthy habits that will probably make anxiety and stress worse is not what you need right now.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 12/04/2020 08:03

You are most definitely not alone.

I have been enjoying a lot more booze than normal but yesterday I wandered into the kitchen around 11.00am and DH was making himself a cuppa, he asked me if I wanted a cuppa or a breakfast whisky!

WTF12345 · 12/04/2020 23:25

Glad I'm not alone, it's bloody shit at the moment, sometimes the drink at the end of the day feels like the only enjoyment. Xx

@WTF12345, make the most of the majority of MN not judging you for drinking loads at this time. It's such a comfort and most sensible people understand that these are strange times and hopefully, temporary Wine.

TheChosenTwo · 13/04/2020 11:08

I’m definitely drinking more, 3 or 4 nights rather than just a Friday and Saturday.
No work to go to (well, we are now working on shifts so sporadically working), glorious weather, nowhere to be, it feels a little like a summer holiday in the most bizarre of circumstances. So yes, dh and I are definitely drinking more than we usually do!

QueenOfWinterfell · 13/04/2020 11:09

Two bottles of wine a week instead of one. I’d drink more but I’m really worried about putting on too much weight. Hope to go back to one once this is all over. I think a lot of people are drinking more to cope with lockdown

lucysmam · 13/04/2020 11:11

I'm drinking more than usual too! Not huge amounts, just a glass of wine with tea most nights, but definitely more.

Usually I'd have a glass on a Tuesday evening after Rainbows and Guides. Then nothing until Friday evening & Saturday evening. Sometimes a glass with Sunday lunch, sometimes not.

Chewbecca · 13/04/2020 11:19

Yes, I am a lockdown lush too.

Trying to have a day or two off a week, but not always managing. Stopping after 1 glass if I succumb on a day off day!

TheChosenTwo · 13/04/2020 11:36

I have not yet stopped to daytime drinking though Grin
I’ve seen a lot of my friends posting midday or afternoon drinks in the garden/with lunch etc - this imo is the road to ruin!!! I’m staying well away from this Grin

TheChosenTwo · 13/04/2020 11:44

Oh ffs stopped was meant to say stooped.

cravingthelook · 13/04/2020 11:54

I've gone from 1-2 bottles of wine per week to 4ish bottles of wine per week. I know it's not great.

I also have gone from 39hours to 70hours work a week.

It is correlated.

I used to have the odd cigarette when drinking/stressed. I've stopped that as I found the first week of lockdown saw me reaching for the packet a lot. That was not acceptable to me. Now I have none. I won't buy any.

I'm snacking a lot. I lost 25lbs last year. I need to keep an eye on this too.

It's hard
