Sponsoring a child - what charity?

Hello everyone,

I saw an ad last night from Plan (or something) and it was about sponsoring a girl and helping put her through school etc. You write to them, they can write to you. Even visits are possible.

We want to do something like this, but we're wary of doing it through a charity which doesn't have a great rep.

How do you know which charity to send your money to?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated. X

Compassion we have sponsored 3 children over the past 10 years and really rate this charity.

Hope that link worked, OP!

We have 2 with Plan. Really recommend them and I've seen their work on the ground in several places. In fact, for one of our kids they wrote to let us know their work in the community had met all the improvements they expected for it to self sustain so would we mind terribly if they moved our sponsorship to another child who needs it more.

My parents started using Plan over thirty years ago, I've used them for over twenty years, always been impressed with them.

We use plan and have found them to be good.

We use Children International because it is a well rated charity in terms of transparency, results and the percentage of donations that goes to the intended recipient. Also they do not choose children based on religion, they don’t even mention anyone’s religion, or offer their help conditional on participation in religious activities - quite a few Christian charities of this kind do that, which IMO is unethical. Finally while you connect directly with one child and can write to her, the money is used for her community and her, so the child doesn’t stand out in her community.

Thank you everyone for taking the time.

I'm looking forward to getting started! I could do with some light in the dark...
