Tesco delivery slot and checkout - newbie now panicking

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:14

After stalking the Tesco website for most of the day I just managed to get a delivery slot for Thursday 30th April.

It's actually for my clients that I clean for, an 80+ year old couple. I've been shopping for them today but limited in what I can carry as I have no car.

I'm now panicking as it says I have to checkout by 02.04am! I thought I could put a couple of things in the basket and then amend when I confirm with them tomorrow what they want.

I've never used a delivery slot before and I'm so tired I can hardly see straight so maybe I'm missing something? Do I really have to get the whole order in and checkout in less than two hours?

Don’t panic! Add a few items in to get it to over £40 or whatever the minimum is. Check out so slot is confirmed. You then have until the day before to make amendments and confirm.

SharonMitchell · 10/04/2020 00:16

Hi, you put things in the basket and check out which then secures your slot, then you can go back and amend to the night before your delivery

Petiolaris · 10/04/2020 00:16

You need to checkout by 2am. It doesn’t matter what’s in the basket, you can edit the order until 11.45pm the day before delivery.

Feelingpoorlysick · 10/04/2020 00:16

As far as I know you have to checkout to confirm the booking and delivery slot, you can then go back to amend at a later date.

AlexaShutUp · 10/04/2020 00:17

Yes, check out tonight and amend later.

GlitteryFluff · 10/04/2020 00:17

Just add one item on and check out.
You can then amend another time.

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:21

Aha! Thank you everyone Flowers

Now those slightly baffling but hilarious posts about people receiving a bottle of £50 booze or a hundred tins of cat food make sense!

In honor of MN I've added two bottles of Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Champagne 75Cl Grin

Now it's asking me to pay..

Hurray! I clicked continue shopping and it now says 'Your slot is reserved'. Phew.

They gave me a lovely homecooked meal for my dinner today so I was determined to get a slot. Can't wait to tell them tomorrow Flowers

I don't think they actually take the money until after delivery. you will be able to change the order up until a certain cut off

Redglitter · 10/04/2020 00:24

It just needs your payment details. Nothing will come out your account til delivery day

ttim985y · 10/04/2020 00:24

OP I think you still need to check out before 2am

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:27

And before anyone worries, all handovers done with more than the regulation social distancing. It helps that there is a foyer where they live where they left a trolley, shopping list and card for contactless (and my dinner). I then did the same with leaving the shopping there. Much waving, smiling and shouting from each side of the glass doors.

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:29

Oh bugger, just checked the page again and small print below still asks me to check out. Will the payment have to come off my card details?

It's a bloody emotional roller coaster this lark!

OP posts:
fizzybootlace · 10/04/2020 00:32

OP, have you put your payment card details in and checked out? They won't take any money but if you don't you'll lose the slot in about 2 hours!!

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:34

I've done it. Card details entered and we'll sort it one way or another.

Thanks for your help everyone. Good luck to anyone else trying to get a slot for those in need Flowers

theclockticksslowly · 10/04/2020 00:39

You’ll be able to change the payment card when you finalise the order. I’ve done the same for my parents - booked the delivery using my card then closer to the time take the multiple bottles of rum and wine off, replace with items my parents want and change the card details to theirs.

Remember to make a note of the deadline for amendments on a calendar or something!

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 00:49

Thank you Clock. I'll have a chat with them tomorrow and see how they want to proceed. Mr W. did manage to do an online shop two weeks ago but they've just had no luck getting a slot since. There's no way they could stay up until midnight to do it.

I'll keep them ticking over with a weekly shop for the next two weeks and then they can get as much as possible on this slot for the following couple of weeks.

It seems a bit mad that they release the slots at such an unsociable hour though. I know it's all a bit sudden and chaotic given the circumstances but there must be a better way.

If they had vulnerable customers register like Sainsbury's have done maybe they could send an email with a one time link to be used within 24/48 hours to the customers on the vulnerable list? Then any slots not claimed within the time limit could then be released for general use. Ah well, I'm sure they are doing the best they can for now.

Yup. Did that at Christmas - one crate of 6 bottles of prosecco delivered to the front door because I forgot to update the order. I was so Blush I made Dh answer the door!

shiningstar2 · 10/04/2020 01:06

I am also unused to food shopping online but secured a click and collect a couple of weeks ago for 18th April. I am terrified of losing it because quite a lot of the order is for my 89 year old mother and her 82 year old neighbour.
Sorry to but in to someone else's thread but can anybody tell me if I need to do anything else. I've made the order and given my card details. I keep checking that the order is still there. I can't see anything saying I have to confirm the order so I'm hoping I just need to turn up and collect it? Please can anyone tell me if this is right. The site does say I can amend the order until the day before and after reading this thread I'm having a bit of a panic in case I miss something and somehow lose the order. The oldies have been very sensible asking for quite a bit at once so I don't have to go too often so I'm desperate not to mess it up. Thanks in advance if anyone can reassure me or tell me if I've missed something.

DarkPassenger · 10/04/2020 01:29

It sounds like you've done everything right @shiningstar2 but I can understand your worries.

Now that mine is booked I'm a bit embarrassed at my panic but I've forgiven myself and put it down to tiredness and my worry about Mr and Mrs.

I'm sure yours will go smoothly too and you'll be much more confident next time Flowers

eggofmantumbi · 10/04/2020 01:34

You can check out with any amount in your basket by the way. I often just put some milk in it as I usually would only do my actual order the day before

CustardySergeant · 10/04/2020 02:03

Can anyone who's used Tesco Click & Collect since the coronavirus pandemic started please tell me how much contact you have with people when you go to collect it? Are they somehow managing to keep their distance?

Redglitter · 10/04/2020 02:31

Theres been a few threads about it. Contact is minimal. It all seems well arranged

Myshitisreal · 10/04/2020 03:12

@darkpassenger they 100 percent don't take the money until the day the order is coming. They check the final amount out once the order is packed.

Other pp, don't panic that's it booked and ready to rock 👍🏼

Nice to hear positive tesco delivery stories😁
