What's your favourite bit of your home?

Since we're all (largely) homebound, I'm curious: what's the thing in your house that you love most or are most grateful for right now?

Anything goes, fancy or totally commonplace: a room, a window, the squeak on the bathroom door, an object, a piece of furniture, a smell...

I'll kick us off with a few of mine:

  • I can watch the sunrise over the sea from my back door. Takes my breath away Every. Single. Morning.
  • My fridge occasionally makes a sound like a tiny indignant elephant (I've named him Frankie)
  • The thick-pile rug beside my bed; the feeling of my toes sinking into it first thing in the morning is HEAVEN (the rest of my bedroom floor is stone and cold in the mornings)

What about you?

The bi-fold doors we put on the kitchen a few years back. They slide open and the whole house feels like it’s gained doubled in size when they’re open because the kitchen is the full width of the house and it opens right out onto the garden.
They were worth every single penny at times like this.

My kitchen. We did it last year just after we moved in, including taking a wall down, so we now have a dining island, a tv and a sofa. It’s just given me a lovely room to work in.

I’m also v grateful for the garage which we just kitted out as a gym for DH I’m time before his gym closed. It means he’s not driving me mad itching round the house.

My garden and all the lovely birds out there. They’re keeping me sane at the moment.

I love my house but I have a special fondness for my shower room. I designed it from scratch and it has a large shower and a skylight so it feels spacious and airy. I do my best thinking in the shower.

Where the house is. We’re very rural and have endless open countryside right outside. I never get tired of the views.

The blanket fort in the playroom. I put a mattress down there and even though its just a thin mattress it feels so much more comfortable than any bed. Probably because of the fort aspect, everyone knows blanket forts are the best place to sleep.

My house has so much natural light. I'm so grateful for that especially since I've not been out since 17th March aside from country walks from my door step. 😖

My kitchen / diner with doors to the garden - its such a sunny bright room and is where everyone hangs out. I can see the bluetits nesting in the bird box DH put up for me and the birds on the feeder in our tiny London garden

My "utility"/pantry room. It's actually a cupboard that is in the back vestibule between the bathroom and kitchen and back door. It was dark and dingy and my husband has painted, created a work surface and shelves (got a massive one up and got a some smaller ones to go up at the back of the work unit). Its got my tumble dryer in as there was absolutely no room anywhere else for it (my house is tiny). I love it! (odd I know but when space is so restricted something like this is a godsend!)

My bedroom. After years of being a shit heap, it’s now very pink and lovely.
I want to be in there all the time.

MinkowskisButterfly · 09/04/2020 09:47

Oh and my garden, I darent even go for an walk atm so my garden is such a wonderful place, room for 5 year old to run around and play football, room for us all to sit at a table and room for the swing. I am so, so grateful for it and really know how lucky we are.

goldenorbspider · 09/04/2020 09:49

My garden! It's just grass but I'm so thankful for it. My last home was just a yard

Crystal87 · 09/04/2020 09:50

Very old terraced house but I love the huge front bedroom and the downstairs high ceilings with detailed ceiling roses and plaster heads at the bottom of the stairs facing each other.

Verily1 · 09/04/2020 09:54

My firm pillow for sitting reading in bed Without feeling the cold bed/wall.

The coffee table- I can’t be without somewhere at hand to put the controls, phone, glasses, tea, hand cream, book, notepad, pen, magazine etc. I hate not having things to hand.

CharDeeMacDennis · 09/04/2020 09:54

My armchair in my bedroom. It's wide and squishy with a big soft back cushion, a big yellow throw cushion and a blue velvet pouffe to stretch legs out on 🤗

I also, after years of being a one-TV household, bought a telly and Fire stick to go with said chair, so in the morning now I curl up with a hot, fresh coffee and watch Netflix or Prime. I adore it.

DD has adopted it and likes to escape up here when I'm wfh downstairs, she gets a break from her little brother.

Very glad we're not in lockdown in our old house, much smaller and scruffier (moved last autumn)

SpokeTooSoon · 09/04/2020 09:55

My utility room because it’s the one place I can hide for five minutes’ peace. Nobody ever goes in there.
