What is happening with my TV?!

My TV is switching itself on in the morning and I have no idea why!

It started shortly after Christmas and I though my nieces had possibly set a timer, but I checked and there was none set. I started unplugging it at night.

More recently I have stopped doing that, and again this intermittent switching on is happening - maybe a couple of days a week. In the last 3 days it has switched on every morning - the first 2 days this was at 8.50am, and this morning it was 7.50am.

I'm completely bewildered! I have checked the timer again - nothing. And even if a timer was set wouldn't this be consistently every day, and at the same time?

Has anyone got any ideas or have I got a ghost?!

Electrical surge? (Not an electrician!)

LividLaughLovely · 08/04/2020 09:16

Remote batteries going! Replace them.

Thought mine had a ghost...

suggestionsplease1 · 08/04/2020 09:25

Electrical surge, yes I had wondered that!

Good idea about the batteries - they have been there for years so wouldn't be surprised if they are failing - I have swapped them out now. Thanks - fingers crossed!

Ghosts. It’s always ghosts.

Have you accidentally set a wake up timer? We've got one on ours and DS randomly set it up when he was younger. One of the cats has turned it on by standing on the remote as well.

No wake up timer, sleep timer or switch off or on timer. I have checked thoroughly...although it is bizarre that for 2 days it was 8.50am, and then it was 7.50am.

I am so confused! I changed the remote batteries and really had it in my head that would be it. But the next day the same thing happened. The day after that, no switch on at all. And today, it switched on at 6am, I went down to turn it off,, had a shower, pottered around in the kitchen and it switched on AGAIN at about 9am!

I am utterly perplexed! Mainly by the apparent regularity some of the time, but not all of the time??! I have unplugged it again but have tried that in the past in case it reset anything, but it oesn't solve the issue.

Neighbours turning their tv on at that time. We can turn our TV on from another room so if you have thin walls could be that

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 13/04/2020 13:19

A client of mine had this problem and my son suggested the following. Try putting the remote somewhere a distance away from the TV, in a drawer and see if that stops it. It could be the remote button is faulty, in which case you will need a new remote.

Zaphodsotherhead · 13/04/2020 13:26

Turn it off at the wall rathe than leaving it on standby?

goldpartyhat · 13/04/2020 14:22

What make is it?

suggestionsplease1 · 13/04/2020 17:36

It's an LG Smart TV, about 2.5 years old. I'm in a detached sandstone house so I don't think it can be the neighbour's tv remote! And why always the morning?!!

I will try the trick hiding the remote and if that doesn't work I will switch off at the plug (but it' s a faff as it's obscured by furniture.)

I've got an LG smart tv too and so far it's behaving. It does turn off HMDI overnight and is always on channel 1 in the morning though. Try resetting the Tv setting, so take it back to system reset. Not sure how though, but basically reinstalling g everything to new. New batteries in the remote first and you've already checked the wake up thing.

Ellmau · 13/04/2020 18:11

My parents' TV has the opposite problem - it turns itself off every evening (if on, obv) at 7 pm. Annoying if watching something.

captainprincess · 13/04/2020 18:12

I had a tv that did this!! It wasn't every day but when it did it would always switch on at 3.13am!! I checked everything, timers, batteries, resetting. It was all fine. In the end I just switched it off at the wall.
A few years ago I gave it to my sister as I got a new one. I warned her about the turning on and she didn't believe me, she also now turns it off at the wall Grin

captainprincess · 13/04/2020 18:12

Meant to say mine was a toshiba.

To reset LG Smart TV :

  1. Go into settings ('gear' button)
  2. Scroll down to settings press OK.
  3. Scroll down to general settings
4 scroll down until you find 'reset to initial settings' 5 Press OK.
  1. The TV will now reset itself and you will need to set it up again, this includes returning and inputting details for any streaming services you have, so have them to hand.

Hope this helps.
