Advice on credit card and holiday?

So I booked a four day break in a European capital, we were due to go at the end of May but we obviously aren’t going, not least because Jet2 have emailed to say they’re flights are grounded until June 14.

The hotel was booked separately at a cost of £750. I usually select the ‘free cancellation’ option, as although it’s a bit more expensive, it’s worth it for peace of mind. Unfortunately this particular hotel didn’t have a ‘free cancellation’ option, and it was the only hotel with the facilities we wanted within our price range, so we booked it anyway, couldn’t have imagined a global pandemic.

I’ve contacted the hotel to see if they will consider cancelling in the circumstances, or rescheduling to later in the year. They ignored my email, so I contacted the booking portal, who contacted them on my behalf and came back saying they refused to cancel or reschedule.

The booking portal has my credit card number but have not yet charged me. I was due to pay on check in. My question is, if I put a block on my credit card, what will happen?

I think you need to ask your credit card company. under normal circumstances credit card companies will force a refund for any sum over £100 if you can show you didn't get what you paid for. this is because legally speaking if you pay by credit card the cc provider becomes the indirect supplier of the goods or services and is jointly liable for any shortcoming. whether that principle will be invoked in this case is impossible to tell - you will need to speak to them.
