Dyeing cotton fabric into a lighter shade (with photo)

I'm looking to dye a cotton grey fabric canopy into a lighter grey. Or even white. What's the best product to use? I've looked at RIT white wash but feedback is mixed. I have tried bleach in the past on cotton and it just went pink! Any tips welcome, thank you

You can't really dye things a lighter colour unless you can bleach the old colour out first.

Dylon (I think) sells a washing machine product that evenly bleached existing colour.

Thank you @Duchessofblandings I think you might mean Dylon pre-due? Have you used it before to achieve a similar look? Worth a shot! www.dylon.co.uk/en/home/products/pre-dye.html

The canopy looks quite large? For any product to work there needs to be plenty of space for the material and water to move about. The Dylon pre-dye is only good for 2.5kg of cloth so check the weight as well. And, if there is any other material e.g. polyester stitching it won't change in the same way as the cotton. The pre-dye is more for dying over, so you might not get a uniform finish if you just try and strip out the grey.

Thanks @Random63638 you're right, it's probably a long shot. I just feel like it's more purple than grey and doesn't match the room, and this sort of thing really annoys me!
